Environmental responses mediated by histone variants

Trends in Cell Biology, 2014
Fluctuations in the ambient environment can trigger chromatin disruptions, involving replacement of nucleosomes or exchange of their histone subunits. Unlike canonical histones, which are available only during S-phase, replication-independent histone variants are present throughout the cell cycle and are adapted for chromatin repair.

Histone variants in mouse centromeric chromatin

Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry, 1989
Highly purified centromeric heterochromatin was isolated from mouse liver nuclei and the pattern of core histone variants was analyzed. In comparison with total chromatin, the centromeric heterochromatin of young animals was characterized by (1) enrichment in the replication-dependent variants H2A1, H2B2 and H3(2), (2) reduced amount of the minor ...

Histone H2A variants H2AX and H2AZ

Current Opinion in Genetics & Development, 2002
Two of the nucleosomal histone families, H3 and H2A, have highly conserved variants with specialized functions. Recent studies have begun to elucidate the roles of two of the H2A variants, H2AX and H2AZ. H2AX is phosphorylated on a serine four residues from the carboxyl terminus in response to the introduction of DNA double-strand breaks, whether these

Histone variants during sea urchin development

Cell Biology International Reports, 1992
The sea urchin genome contains several histone gene families whose expression is regulated in a developmental and tissue-specific fashion. The Cleavage Stage (CS) histone subtype is synthesized in unfertilized eggs and in embryos until the third cell cycle.
