Outside of cells, it becomes a proinflammatory cytokine.

Changes in the secondary structure of HMGB1 protein bonded to DNA
Journal of Structural Chemistry, 2009The stage of noncooperative interaction of the chromosomal nonhistone protein HMGB1 with DNA has been studied by spectroscopic methods and gel retardation. It was found that complexation was accompanied by compaction of the DNA molecule over a wide range of protein/DNA ratios in the complex.
