Lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) are a common complaint and although can be adequately managed with medication, surgery remains the mainstay of treatment. Transurethral resection has been the reference 'gold standard', but due to its complications and issues with larger volume prostates, many alternatives have been developed and assessed.

Comparison of TURP, TUVRP, and HoLEP
Current Prostate Reports, 2009Since the first transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) was performed by Guyon at the Necker Hospital in Paris in 1901, this treatment modality has replaced open prostatectomy as the procedure of choice for more than 95% of patients. HoLEP techniques - lessons learned.
The Canadian journal of urology, 2021INTRODUCTION Holmium laser enucleation of the prostate (HoLEP) with mechanical tissue morcellation is one of the most effective surgical modalities for the treatment of symptomatic BPH. Holmium Laser Enucleation of the Prostate (HoLEP)
2014Holmium laser enucleation of the prostate (HoLEP) represents a minimally invasive approach to surgical management of BPH that offers many advantages to the surgeon. Using a 100 W holmium-cutting laser to enucleate tissue down to the prostatic capsule, it recreates the resection of a suprapubic prostatectomy transurethrally, with excellent hemostasis ...

Rectourethral fistula: a rare complication after HoLEP.
The Canadian journal of urology, 2019We report a rare complication of rectourethral fistula formation 6 weeks after a 70-year-old man underwent an uneventful HoLEP procedure. Cystourethrogram confirmed the diagnosis and the patient was managed conservatively with chronic indwelling catheter placement for 6 weeks.

[Observational study on urinary status following HoLEP].
Hinyokika kiyo. Acta urologica Japonica, 2014We assessed the safety, and postoperative urinary status of holmium laser enucleation of the prostate (HoLEP) for the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Of the initial 117 patients who underwent HoLEP from November 2004 to March 2011, 49 were followed up for two yearsor longer.
