Sleep and Synaptic Homeostasis
2014In the last decades a substantial knowledge about sleep mechanisms has been accumulated. However, the function of sleep still remains elusive. The difficulty with unraveling sleep's function may arise from the lack of understanding of how the multitude of processes associated with waking and sleep-from gene expression and single neuron activity to the ...

Apoptotic cells are removed by professional and nonprofessional phagocytes via the process of "efferocytosis." Efferocytosis is highly efficient such that accumulation of dead cells is rarely seen in healthy tissues, even though our bodies remove 200-400 billion apoptotic cells daily.

Temperature Homeostasis and Redox Homeostasis
2001It appears that the constancy of body temperature, among other metabolic equilibria, depends to a certain extent on a homeostatically regulated ratio of brain redox buffer components, which are in virtually all animal cells, glutathione and its disulfide. Glutathione serves additionally as an antioxidant by directly reacting with radicals.

Assessment of Glutathione Homeostasis
2011The tripeptide glutathione (γ-glutamylcysteinylglycine; GSH) is the most abundant antioxidant thiol in the brain. GSH plays a critical role in protecting brain cells from oxidative stress and xenobiotics, as well as maintaining the thiol redox state. High levels of GSH are present in the central nervous system, particularly in astrocytes.
