Genetic attenuation of ALDH1A1 increases metastatic potential and aggressiveness in colorectal cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Aldehyde dehydrogenase 1A1 (ALDH1A1) is a cancer stem cell marker in several malignancies. We established a novel epithelial cell line from rectal adenocarcinoma with unique overexpression of this enzyme. Genetic attenuation of ALDH1A1 led to increased invasive capacity and metastatic potential, the inhibition of proliferation activity, and ultimately ...

RIPK4 function interferes with melanoma cell adhesion and metastasis

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
RIPK4 promotes melanoma growth and spread. RIPK4 levels increase as skin lesions progress to melanoma. CRISPR/Cas9‐mediated deletion of RIPK4 causes melanoma cells to form less compact spheroids, reduces their migratory and invasive abilities and limits tumour growth and dissemination in mouse models.

Ecomorphology and history of a recurrent evolutionary adaptation to long-distance bird dispersal in Asteraceae

open access: yesBoletín de la Sociedad Argentina de Botánica
Background and aims: Genera of Asteraceae, belonging to different tribes, present a repeated pattern of morphological adaptations to epiornithochory and have unique distributions (widely disjunct and/or inhabit remote islands). This pattern requires the

Rethinking plastic waste: innovations in enzymatic breakdown of oil‐based polyesters and bioplastics

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Plastic pollution remains a critical environmental challenge, and current mechanical and chemical recycling methods are insufficient to achieve a fully circular economy. This review highlights recent breakthroughs in the enzymatic depolymerization of both oil‐derived polyesters and bioplastics, including high‐throughput protein engineering, de novo ...

A general theory of the complex pronotum morphology of treehoppers in Smiliinae and its relatives (Hemiptera: Membracidae) and its applicability to other subfamilies

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Entomology
Treehoppers are characterized by exaggerated and three-dimensionally modified pronotal structures, known as "helmets". The treehopper pronotum has been studied mainly in terms of taxonomic diagnosis for over a century.

Homologous expression and purification of human HAX‐1 for structural studies

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
This research protocol provides detailed instructions for cloning, expressing, and purifying large quantities of the intrinsically disordered human HAX‐1 protein, N‐terminally fused to a cleavable superfolder GFP, from mammalian cells. HAX‐1 is predicted to undergo posttranslational modifications and to interact with membranes, various cellular ...

Proteomic Profiling of Bacterial Extracellular Vesicles for Exploring Ovarian Cancer Biomarkers

open access: yesJournal of Extracellular Biology
Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are present in body fluids and act as disease biomarkers. Emerging evidence has proven that EVs are released not only from mammalian cells but also from bacteria.

SmallTalk: a novel small‐sized fusion tag for peptide expression and purification

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
The SmallTalk fusion tag allows for the efficient expression and purification of soluble recombinant proteins or peptides in Escherichia coli. Testing with SmallTalk‐GFP confirmed that the proteins were soluble and folded correctly, while SmallTalk‐Bin1b maintained its antimicrobial activity against various bacterial isolates. This streamlined workflow

Active screening and molecular epidemiological characteristics of fecal colonization by carbapenem-resistant Enterobacterales in intensive care unit wards of a tertiary hospital in Shanghai, China

open access: yesFrontiers in Public Health
BackgroundActive screening for fecal colonization by carbapenem-resistant Enterobacterales (CRE-FC) and interventions in intensive care unit (ICU) wards have become important measures to prevent carbapenem-resistant Enterobacterales (CRE) infection ...
