A HARP SEAL × HOODED SEAL HYBRID
Marine Mammal Science, 1997AbstractIn this study we report the first documentation of mating between harp (Phoca groenlandica) and hooded seals (Cystophora cristata). The production of this hybrid was quite unusual, being the result of a cross between parents of different genera which are morphologically dissimilar and have quite different mating behavior and dramatically ...

Polioencephalomalacia in a juvenile hooded seal ( Cystophora cristata )
Veterinary Record, 2006appeared grossly normal. No significant bacteria were recovered on microbiology and all the examinations for Brucella species were negative. Histological examination of coronal slices of the fore-, midand hindbrain and one sagittal slice of the cerebellum showed widespread lesions of polioencephalomalacia throughout the cerebrum.

Cystophora cristata (Hooded seal)
1973These karyotypes are gifts of Dr. U. Arnason, Lund, Sweden, and were prepared from solid tissue culture by the orcein squash method. The male came from Kulusuk, Greenland, and the female, from Newfoundland, Canada.

The eye of the hooded seal,Cystophora cristata, in air and water
Journal of Comparative Physiology A, 1989Multiple refractive state measurements were made on a male and female hooded seal (Cystophora cristata) when the eyes were exposed to air and to water. The measures, made by conventional retinoscopy and by photorefraction, show that the seals are moderately hyperopic (2-3 diopters) in water and moderately myopic (2-4 diopters) in air.

Vitamin D Metabolism in the Hooded Seal (Cystophora cristata)
The Journal of Nutrition, 1988Fish-eating mammals, such as seals, appear to ingest levels of vitamin D that are toxic to most mammals. To determine how seals cope with high vitamin D intakes, the metabolism of tritiated cholecalciferol ([3H]D3) was investigated in hooded seal (Cystophora cristata) pups during their postweaning fast and pups and adults consuming herring alone or ...

Systemic Mucormycosis in a Hooded Seal (Cystophora cristata)
Journal of Zoo and Wildlife Medicine, 2011A 4-yr-old male captive hooded seal (Cystophora cristata), previously diagnosed as hypothyroid, died after a 3-wk period of lethargy and inappetance despite treatment that included intramuscular administration of antibiotics and multivitamins. Gross pathologic findings included extensive muscle necrosis over the left flank, an underlying necrotic iliac

The Hood of the Hooded Seal, Cystophora cristata Erxl.
Nature, 1958IT is well known that the male of the hooded seal, Cystophora cristata, can inflate its hood, which is the greatly enlarged skin of the snout. It is also known that the male hooded seal can extrude an assumed pair of fiery red bladders or balloons through his nose.

Exploitation and conservation of Harp and Hood Seals
Polar Record, 1965Great improvements have taken place in the last few years in the dressing of hair seal pelts for furs and the market for these furs has diversified and expanded. Consequently, the catching of hair seals of all species has intensified and the stocks of Harp Seals (Pagophilus groenlandicus)and Hood Seals (Cystophora cristata) of the North Atlantic ...

Panmictic population structure in the hooded seal (Cystophora cristata)
Molecular Ecology, 2007AbstractTwo putative populations of hooded seals (Cystophora cristata) occur in the North Atlantic. The Greenland Sea population pup and breed on the pack ice near Jan Mayen (‘West Ice’) while the Northwest Atlantic population is thought to pup in the Davis Strait, in the Gulf of St.
