Metastasis on pause: How dormant tumor cells stay hidden within the tumor microenvironment and evade immune surveillance

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Dormant cancer cells can hide in distant organs for years, evading treatment and the immune system. This review highlights how signals from the surrounding tissue and immune environment keep these cells inactive or trigger their reawakening. Understanding these mechanisms may help develop therapies to eliminate or control dormant cells and prevent ...

Illuminating coronavirus-host interactions

open access: yes, 2009
Viruses are infectious agents incapable of growing or reproducing outside a host cell. They are completely dependent on the cellular machinery of the host for their multiplication.

A virulent strain of deformed wing virus (DWV) of honeybees (Apis mellifera) prevails after varroa destructor-mediated, or in vitro, transmission [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
The globally distributed ectoparasite Varroa destructor is a vector for viral pathogens of the Western honeybee (Apis mellifera), in particular the Iflavirus Deformed Wing Virus (DWV).

DNA methylation and expression of MAPRE3 affect overall survival of early‐stage non‐small cell lung cancer patients

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Both cg12821679MAPRE3 methylation and MAPRE3 expression are significantly associated with overall survival (OS) of non‐small cell lung cancer. Meanwhile, MAPRE3 expression significantly modified the effect of smoking cessation on OS. Smoking cessation benefits OS merely for patients with high MAPRE3 expression.

Genetic variability in parasites and host-parasite interactions

open access: yes, 1996
We have examined genetic variability in parasites in the context of ecological interactions with the host. Recent research on Echinococcus, Giardia and Cryptosporidium has been used to illustrate: (i) the problems that parasite variability and species ...

Heterogeneous host susceptibility enhances prevalence of mixed-genotype micro-parasite infections

open access: yes, 2011
Dose response in micro-parasite infections is usually shallower than predicted by the independent action model, which assumes that each infectious unit has a probability of infection that is independent of the presence of other infectious units. Moreover,

Life-history responses, transmission dynamics and epidemiology in a terrestrial gastropod infected with parasitic mites [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Parasites are known to influence the life-history of their hosts. A parasite-induced reduction in host fecundity and survival may lead to a reduced rate of increase in the host population.

Circulating tumor cell viability during and after radiotherapy mirrors treatment response in cancer patients

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Radiotherapy (RT) response depends on the DNA repair capacity of tumor and host cells. We show that circulating tumor cell (CTC) counts and apoptosis rates before and after RT predict treatment response and outcome, which can be accessed via easily accessible liquid biopsy approaches. The genetics of host adaptation in the parasitic plant Striga hermonthica [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
The obligately outbreeding root hemiparasite Striga hermonthica (Orobanchaceae)is a serious threat to subsistence agriculture in sub-Saharan Africa. Resistance to this parasite in its crop hosts, such as rice, sorghum and maize, is not common, and the ...
