Investigation of the Uniformity of Gel Shrinkage by Imaging Tracer Particles Using X‐Ray Microtomography

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView., 2023
A novel method for tracking structural changes in gels using widely accessible microcomputed tomography is presented and validated for various hydro‐, alco‐, and aerogels. The core idea of the method is to track positions of micrometer‐sized tracer particles entrapped in the gel and relate them to the density of the gel network.

Hydrogeochemical characteristics and genesis of Hongshuilantang Hot Spring and its water temperature anomalies during the Rushan earthquake swarm in Eastern China

open access: yesFrontiers in Earth Science, 2023
Water temperatures of hot springs close to tectonic fault zones often show some variations before earthquakes, and analyses of earthquake precursors in hot springs have significant referential meaning for earthquake monitoring and forecasting. This study

Deep groundwater discharge after the 2011 Mw 6.6 Iwaki earthquake, Japan

open access: yesEarth, Planets and Space, 2020
Hot spring discharge was linked to the 2011 Mw 6.6 Iwaki earthquake. Periodic surveys revealed that the discharge continued for more than 7 years, which is a rare and valuable long-term record of hot spring discharge triggered by an earthquake in a non ...

Night-Time Hot Spring Bathing Is Associated with a Lower Systolic Blood Pressure among Japanese Older Adults: A Single-Institution Retrospective Cohort Study

open access: yesGeriatrics, 2023
Hot spring bathing is practiced to help manage hypertension. We retrospectively investigated the effects of hot spring bathing on hypertension with the aim of identifying a novel approach to prevent and manage hypertension.

What Makes a Hot-Spring Habitat “Hot” for the Hot-Spring Snake: Distributional Data and Niche Modelling for the Genus Thermophis (Serpentes, Colubridae)

open access: yesDiversity, 2021
Knowledge about species’ distributions is central to diverse applications in ecology, biogeography, and conservation science. Hot-spring snakes of the genus Thermophis share a distribution restricted to geothermal sites at the Tibetan Plateau (T. baileyi)

Identification of bacterial communities in extreme sites of Pakistan using high throughput barcoded amplicon sequencing [PDF]

open access: yesBiodiversity Data Journal, 2021
Microorganisms thrive nearly everywhere including extreme environments where few other forms of life can exist. Geochemistry of extreme sites plays a major role in shaping these microbial communities and microbes thriving in such harsh conditions are ...

Geochemical studies at four northern Nevada hot spring areas. [Kyle Hot Springs, Leach Hot Springs, Buffalo Hot Springs, and Beowave Hot Springs] [PDF]

open access: yes, 1977
Water samples from both hot and cold sources in the hydrologic areas surrounding the hot springs were collected and analyzed. Analyses of major, trace, and radio-element abundances of the water samples and of associated rock samples are presented. From this study it is possible that trace- and major-element abundances and/or ratios may be discerned ...
