Let there be light: Artificial light cues improve early life ramp use of laying hen chicks in a commercial aviary

open access: yesPoultry Science
In rearing aviaries, the provision of ramps has been found to facilitate the early utilization of elevated structures and increase inter-tier transitions.

Goats work for food in a contrafreeloading task

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2020
Contrafreeloading (CFL) is the phenomenon when animals work for a resource although an identical resource is available for free. Possible explanations for CFL are that animals seek context for species-specific behaviours or to control their environments.

In situ molecular organization and heterogeneity of the Legionella Dot/Icm T4SS

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We present a nearly complete in situ model of the Legionella Dot/Icm type IV secretion system, revealing its central secretion channel and identifying new components. Using cryo‐electron tomography with AI‐based modeling, our work highlights the structure, variability, and mechanism of this complex nanomachine, advancing understanding of bacterial ...

Effects of weaning age and housing conditions on phenotypic differences in mice

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2020
Poor reproducibility is considered a serious problem in laboratory animal research, with important scientific, economic, and ethical implications. One possible source of conflicting findings in laboratory animal research are environmental differences ...

Sequence determinants of RNA G‐quadruplex unfolding by Arg‐rich regions

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We show that Arg‐rich peptides selectively unfold RNA G‐quadruplexes, but not RNA stem‐loops or DNA/RNA duplexes. This length‐dependent activity is inhibited by acidic residues and is conserved among SR and SR‐related proteins (SRSF1, SRSF3, SRSF9, U1‐70K, and U2AF1).

Fractionized milk composition in dairy cows with subclinical mastitis

open access: yesVeterinární Medicína, 2004
Mastitis is the inflammatory reaction of the udder to invading pathogens. One of the most apparent reactions is the increased influx of immunoreactive cells from blood into milk inducing a dramatic increase of milk somatic cell counts (SCC).

Performance of goats in a detour and a problem-solving test following long-term cognitive test exposure

open access: yesRoyal Society Open Science, 2021
Cognitive research in long-lived species commonly involves using the same animals in different experiments. It is unclear whether the participation in cognitive tests can notably alter the performance of individuals in subsequent conceptually different ...

Thermoneutral housing exacerbates non-alcoholic fatty liver disease in mice and allows for sex-independent disease modeling

open access: yesNature Medicine, 2017
Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), a common prelude to cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma, is the most common chronic liver disease worldwide.

Owner-Related Reasons Matter more than Behavioural Problems—A Study of Why Owners Relinquished Dogs and Cats to a Danish Animal Shelter from 1996 to 2017

open access: yesAnimals, 2020
Simple Summary Many dogs and cats are relinquished to shelters by their owners. To reduce their number, it will be vital to know whether people relinquish their pets primarily as a result of real or perceived problems created by the animals, or because ...

Consumer attitudes towards production diseases in intensive production systems [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
Many members of the public and important stakeholders operating at the upper end of the food chain, may be unfamiliar with how food is produced, including within modern animal production systems.
