Molecular epidemiology of HTLV-2 infection among intravenous drug users in Spain
Journal of Clinical Virology, 2005HTLV-2 infection is prevalent among intravenous drug users (IDUs), which often are coinfected with HIV-1. Two main subtypes, HTLV-2a and -2b, have been described among European IDUs, with a characteristically geographic distribution: IIa in northern Europe and IIb in the south.

Hematologic hints of HTLV-2 in US blood donors
Blood, 2008The HOST investigators have maintained a multiregional and longitudinal survey of donors infected with HTLV-I and HTLV-II for over 14 years. The survey has provided extremely valuable information regarding the long-term consequences of asymptomatic infection with HTLV-I or HTLV-II.[1][1],[2][2 ...

NK cells constitute a major reservoir of HTLV‐2 infection in vivo
The FASEB Journal, 2008HTLV‐2 is a deltaretrovirus, possibly associated with neurological manifestations. Initially believed to be restricted to CD8+ lymphocytes, the virus has been shown to infect also CD4+ T‐cells and B cells. Here we show for the first time that HTLV‐2 also infects NK cells in vivo .

Long Terminal Repeat Sequence Analysis of HTLV-2 Molecular Variants Identified in Southern Brazil
AIDS Research and Human Retroviruses, 2010In Brazil, human T-lymphotropic virus type 2 (HTLV-2) is endemic in Amerindians and epidemic in intravenous drug users (IDUs). The long terminal repeat (LTR) is the most divergent genomic region of HTLV-2, therefore useful to characterize subtypes. Nucleotide sequence and restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) analysis of LTR genomic segments ...

Evaluation of the New Multi-HTLV Serological Assay: Improvement for HTLV-2 Detection
AIDS Research and Human RetrovirusesDespite the accuracy of confirmatory tests for the diagnosis of human T cell lymphotropic virus (HTLV), inconclusive or false-negative results still occur when diagnosing human T cell lymphotropic virus type 2 (HTLV-2)-positive patients. The goal of this study was to evaluate the sensitivity and accuracy of a confirmatory immunoassay, the Multi-HTLV ...

Human T-Cell Leukemia Virus Type 2 (HTLV-2) Biology and Pathogenesis
2011Human T-cell leukemia viruses (HTLV) type 1 (HTLV-1) and type 2 (HTLV-2) are highly related complex retroviruses that have been studied intensely for nearly three decades because of their capacity to transform primary human T-lymphocytes, their association with neuropathology, and/or neoplasia.
