We tested serum specimens from patients with HAM/TSP and asymptomatic HTLV-I carriers from endemic areas of Japan, Jamaica, Colombia, and Chile for neutralizing antibodies against HTLV-I. The data suggest a trend for neutralizing activity to be found more frequently in the sera from HAM/TSP patients than in sera from asymptomatic carriers.

We investigated the presence of anti-human T-lymphotropic virus type I (HTLV-I) IgM in sera and cerebrospinal fluid from patients with HTLV-I-associated myelopathy (HAM) by Western blot analysis. Analyses of 36 serum samples revealed that most patients (31/36; 86.1%) had anti-HTLV-I IgM, whereas only four of 23 (17.4%) HTLV-I carriers had it.

HTLV-I Antibodies Associated with Cutaneous T Cell Lymphoma in Denmark
1985The first isolation and characterization of a human retrovirus was done by Gallo and co-workers from patients with aggressive cases of adult T cell leukemia/lymphoma in the United States [15, 16]. This virus, named human T cell leukemia/lymphoma virus (HTLV-I) is a T cell-tropic retrovirus [8, 9], initially found sporadically among United States cases ...
