Human-Animal Bond: Attachment vs. Objectification [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
The bond between human beings and their pets is multi-faceted. Some doting "parents" view their companion animals as members of their families while others maintain the more traditional expectation of service or commodification.

The ubiquitin‐proteasome system and autophagy as guardians of the cellular proteome

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This Perspective covers the three principles governing the crosstalk between the ubiquitin‐proteasome system and autophagy in cellular proteostasis: (1) a shared ubiquitin code routing substrates via shuttle factors or autophagy receptors; (2) spatial compartmentalization into phase‐separated degradation hubs and organelle‐specific modules (exemplified

The Welfare of Dogs as an Aspect of the Human–Dog Bond: A Scoping Review [PDF]

open access: yes
The close bond that can exist between humans and their dogs is an important aspect of the evolutionary, economic, and social connections between the two species. There is a need for a better understanding of the place of the dog within the human–dog bond

Microbiome−host proteostasis crosstalk—An emerging perspective on mechanisms and interventions toward healthy longevity

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Proteostasis and the gut microbiota play a key role in shaping host physiology. Microbiota‐derived metabolites, vitamins, and RNA modulate host proteostasis. Findings from model systems, including C. elegans, indicate microbes can either stabilize or disrupt host proteostasis.

Animal culture in non-human primates: a review [PDF]

open access: yes, 2023
In the last decades, a large number of cultural behaviours have been reported across different taxa. The main evidence is found in non-human primates.

ANIMAL WELFARE AND THE HUMAN-ANIMAL BOND IN STUDENT EDUCATION – HOW CAN WE UNDERSTAND ANIMAL FEELINGS? HOW DO WE ASK FOR CONSENT FROM A HORSE?

open access: yesSlovenian Veterinary Research
Students in veterinary education want positive interactions with their clients, but learn that a stressed animal can become unpredictable. If students can learn how to measure or evaluate the animal’s affective state before the physical exam, they can ...

From mice to humans—divergent strategies for intestinal homeostasis and regeneration

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Recent advances such as organoid genome editing, xenotransplantation, imaging, and whole‐genome sequencing have enabled direct studies of human intestinal stem cells (ISCs). These studies reveal species‐specific features, including slower ISC proliferation, distinct injury responses, slower somatic mutation accumulation in humans, and an inverse ...

Phosphoinositides and inositol phosphates as molecular glues

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Inositol phosphates (IPs) and phosphoinositides (PIPs) regulate diverse eukaryotic processes. Beyond recruiting signaling proteins or acting as structural cofactors, recent studies suggest they mediate protein–protein interactions as natural molecular glues.

Structural insights and therapeutic targets in Acinetobacter baumannii capsule biosynthesis

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Hypervirulent KL49 A. baumannii's capsular polysaccharide contains the nonulosonic acid 8‐epi‐Leg5,7Ac2, synthesized by epimerization via ElaA, ElaB, and ElaC. Crystal structures of ElaA, ElaB, and ElaC reveal their role in CMP‐Leg5,7Ac2 synthesis and regioselective C8 epimerization.
