Tau acetylation at K331 has limited impact on tau pathology in vivo

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We mapped tau post‐translational modifications in humanized MAPT knock‐in mice and in amyloid‐bearing double knock‐in mice. Acetylation within the repeat domain, particularly around K331, showed modest increases under amyloid pathology. To test functional relevance, we generated MAPTK331Q knock‐in mice.

Precision trimmer aids in preparing biomedical specimen blocks for ultrathin sectioning [PDF]

open access: yes, 1967
Precision trimmer, which neatly trims biomedical specimen blocks for ultrathin sectioning, eliminates the risk of human error. Four inches in diameter and 3 inches in height, it supports the block and serves as a support for a cutting tool and can be ...

Calpain small subunit homodimerization is robust and calcium‐independent

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Calpains dimerize via penta‐EF‐hand (PEF) domains. Using single‐molecule force spectroscopy, we measured the strength and kinetics of PEF–PEF homodimer binding. The interaction is robust, shows a transient conformational step before dissociation, and remains largely insensitive to Ca2+.

Cost–benefit analysis as a decision tool for effective conservation planning—The case of the Nyerere Selous‐Udzungwa wildlife corridor in Tanzania

open access: yesConservation Science and Practice
Cost benefit analysis (CBA) is used in many fields to ensure efficient allocation of scarce resources but is rarely applied in conservation. By using a common metric to evaluate projects in complex social‐ecological systems, CBA can help to maximize the ...

Understanding landowner intentions to create early successional forest habitat in the northeastern United States

open access: yesWildlife Society Bulletin, 2016
Early successional forest habitat (ESH) and associated wildlife species in the northeastern United States are in decline. One way to help create early successional forest conditions is engaging private forest landowners in even‐aged forest management ...

Ethical decision making [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
The self-centeredness of modern organizations leads to environmental destruction and human deprivation. The principle of responsibility developed by Hans Jonas requires caring for the beings affected by our decisions and actions.

Structural insights into an engineered feruloyl esterase with improved MHET degrading properties

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
A feruloyl esterase was engineered to mimic key features of MHETase, enhancing the degradation of PET oligomers. Structural and computational analysis reveal how a point mutation stabilizes the active site and reshapes the binding cleft, expading substrate scope.

Communicating about zoonotic disease: Strategic considerations for wildlife professionals

open access: yesWildlife Society Bulletin, 2011
A set of interrelated social and environmental changes have accelerated the transmission of wildlife‐associated infectious diseases around the world. Emerging infectious disease (EID) events take a heavy toll on human health and have significant global ...
