Model Complexity-Accuracy Trade-off for a Convolutional Neural Network

open access: yes, 2017
Convolutional Neural Networks(CNN) has had a great success in the recent past, because of the advent of faster GPUs and memory access. CNNs are really powerful as they learn the features from data in layers such that they exhibit the structure of the V-1

A clear human footprint in the coral reefs of the Caribbean [PDF]

open access: yesProceedings of the Royal Society B: Biological Sciences, 2008
The recent degradation of coral reefs worldwide is increasingly well documented, yet the underlying causes remain debated. In this study, we used a large-scale database on the status of coral reef communities in the Caribbean and analysed it in combination with a comprehensive set of socioeconomic and environmental databases to decouple confounding ...

Weakly‐Coordinating Non‐Fluorinated Diluents for Local High‐Concentration Electrolytes in Advanced Lithium Metal Batteries

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
This perspective critically evaluates non‐fluorinated diluents in local high‐concentration electrolytes, categorizing their solvation behavior, interfacial mechanisms, and sustainability potential to guide future electrolyte design for lithium metal batteries.

Predicting the Impact of Climate Change on Corylus Species Distribution in China: Integrating Climatic, Topographic, and Anthropogenic Factors

open access: yesEcology and Evolution
This study investigates the impact of climate change on the distribution of Corylus species in China using the MaxEnt model. Key environmental variables, such as Bio6 (mean temperature of the coldest month) and human footprint, emerged as significant ...

The Sound/Music Dilemma: Why Is It That All Music Is Sound but Only Some Sounds Are Music? [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Even if sound and music are deeply intertwined phenomena, it is still fiercely debated whether all music is made up of sound, and vice versa, whether all sound can be deemed as music.

Photocatalytic Water Splitting on the Lunar Surface: Prospects for In Situ Resource Utilization

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Interfaces, EarlyView.
Water has been found in craters on the moon nearby locations which are illuminated >80% of the time. Photocatalysis uses energy from sunlight to drive chemical reactions such as water splitting to produce oxygen and hydrogen. It is a scalable technology that requires lighter equipment and utilizes resources available on the moon. ABSTRACT The discovery

Characterization and Antimicrobial Activity of Hafnium Nanostructures Fabricated by Physical Vapor Deposition Through a Colloidal Mask

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Interfaces, EarlyView.
We generate hafnium nanostructures by first depositing polystyrene particles of varying diameter followed by physical vapour deposition of hafnium thin films. The resultant structure shows a kill‐on‐contact effect against both Gram‐negative Escherichia coli and Gram‐positive Staphylococcus aureus.

The Extent of Anthropogenic Disturbance on Wetland Area in the Oil Sands Region of Alberta, Canada Between 2000 and 2018

open access: yesLand
Wetlands globally have and continue to undergo modification from anthropogenic and natural environmental factors. To bridge this gap, this study utilised a GIS-based approach to quantify the areal extent of human footprint disturbances to wetlands over ...

Additional measures of progress for Scotland : an analysis of the issues and problems associated with aggregate/composite measures of sustainability [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
the purpose of this paper is to consider the broad set of issues and problems associated with adopting aggregate measures of sustainability. We do this by first considering what we mean when we talk about 'sustainable development' in a policy context and
