Impact of river engineering on Vistula river channel morphometry near Warsaw (Poland): a 172-year perspective

open access: yesMiscellanea Geographica: Regional Studies on Development
This study investigates the impact of river engineering on the morphometry of the Vistula River channel near Warsaw, Poland, over a 172-year period. This research focuses on the examination of modifications in the Vistula channel between 1843 and 2015 ...

Transferrin receptor 1‐mediated iron uptake supports thermogenic activation in human cervical‐derived adipocytes

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
In this study, we found that human cervical‐derived adipocytes maintain intracellular iron level by regulating the expression of iron transport‐related proteins during adrenergic stimulation. Melanotransferrin is predicted to interact with transferrin receptor 1 based on in silico analysis.

Determinants of change in the duration of ice phenomena on the Vistula River in Toruń

open access: yesJournal of Hydrology and Hydromechanics, 2015
Winter season temperatures are becoming warmer. However, the transformation of the ice regime on the Vistula River in Toruń has also been affected by river engineering.

Human capital spillovers, productivity and regional convergence in Spain [PDF]

open access: yes
This paper analyses the differential impact of human capital, in terms of different levels of schooling, on regional productivity and convergence. The potential existence of geographical spillovers of human capital is also considered by applying spatial ...

Tau acetylation at K331 has limited impact on tau pathology in vivo

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We mapped tau post‐translational modifications in humanized MAPT knock‐in mice and in amyloid‐bearing double knock‐in mice. Acetylation within the repeat domain, particularly around K331, showed modest increases under amyloid pathology. To test functional relevance, we generated MAPTK331Q knock‐in mice.

Indices of human impacts on landscapes: How do they reflect the proportions of natural habitats?

open access: yesOpen Life Sciences
Human activities significantly influence landscapes, altering natural habitats and ecosystem services. This study examines the relationship between human impacts, measured by the hemeroby index and coefficient of anthropogenic impact (CAI´), and the ...

The Potential of Manor Gardens for Natural Habitats Conservation

open access: yesJournal of Landscape Ecology, 2019
Historical gardens established around manors form an integral part of the European cultural landscape. Recent studies have revealed that manor gardens may serve as local hotspots of biodiversity and provide cultural ecosystem services within urban areas ...

The human impact of heatwaves and extreme weather [PDF]

open access: yes
In the last century, Australia\u27s average temperature rose by slightly less than one degree over the pre-industrial average. Without concerted action by all countries, including Australia, the world is on a path to exceeding 4°C by the 2060s ...

Calpain small subunit homodimerization is robust and calcium‐independent

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Calpains dimerize via penta‐EF‐hand (PEF) domains. Using single‐molecule force spectroscopy, we measured the strength and kinetics of PEF–PEF homodimer binding. The interaction is robust, shows a transient conformational step before dissociation, and remains largely insensitive to Ca2+.
