Microchemical tests for hydantoins and barbiturate-hydantoin mixtures
Microchemical Journal, 1972Abstract Substituted hydantoins, a number of which possess anticonvulsant activity and are prescribed alone or compounded with barbiturates, were observed to enter into a number of reactions commonly utilized to identify barbituric acid derivatives. The reactivity of the hydantoins with the Dille-Koppanyi and the Zwikker tests is sufficiently similar

The increased incidence of fetal malformation after gestational exposure to hydantoin has been reported in pediatric,1obstetric,1and general medical3journals but not previously, to my knowledge, in the dermatologic literature. The distinctive cutaneous features of the fetal hydantoin syndrome may bring the disorder to the attention of the dermatologist.

Publisher Summary This chapter reviews the chemistry of hydantoins. The hydantoins can be synthesized using amino acids, cyanate or thiocyanate salts, alkyl or aryl isocyanates and isothiocyanates, ureas, α-dicarbonyl compounds, Bucherer–Bergs and Read reactions, and cycloaddition reactions with heterocumulenes.
