From Fiber Bundles to Architected Membranes: Triply Periodic Minimal Surface Architectures for Biohybrid Artificial Lungs

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Additively manufactured triply periodic minimal surface (TPMS) membranes offer an architecture‐driven alternative to hollow fiber bundles in artificial lungs. Multiphysics simulations and endothelialized prototypes show that the 3D‐printable membrane architecture improves gas exchange, blood flow distribution, and hemocompatibility, enabling ...

Cleaning method of working volumes of hydraulic cylinders of agricultural machines without preliminary dismantling

open access: yesSiberian Journal of Life Sciences and Agriculture
Background.  More and more often lifting equipment is equipped with a hydraulic drive, which allows to develop the highest tractive force. However, this type of drive is prone to a reduction in the speed of the mechanism due to possible clogging of the ...

Understanding Operando Water Management in Hydroxide‐Exchange‐Membrane Fuel Cells

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Interfaces, EarlyView.
Effective water management is vital for high‐performance hydroxide‐exchange‐membrane fuel cells. Using a custom water‐flux station, this study quantifies how membrane thickness, microporous layers, and operating conditions dictate internal water transport.

SWMM Modelling of Automated Hydraulic Flushing Gate as a Flow Control Structure [PDF]

open access: yes, 2021
Abstract This study explores the concept of hydraulic flushing gate with an automated control system as a flow control structure of the urban storm water system. The research team has implemented a flush gate with the automated control system to the flow of the water in a drainage channel.

3D‐Nanoprinted Fluidically Steerable Soft Robotic Microcatheters

open access: yesAdvanced Robotics Research, EarlyView.
This work introduces a ∼3‐French (1 mm‐in‐diameter) soft robotic microcatheter fabricated by means of two‐photon direct laser writing. The 3D‐printed microcatheter enables remote, on‐demand steering via microfluidic actuation for guidewire‐free navigation of vascular networks as well as microcatheter‐mediated delivery of fluidic payloads to target ...

Bioinspired Passive Flow Routing to Mitigate Thrombosis in Prosthetic Heart Valves and Cardiovascular Devices

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Bioinspired passive flow routing mitigates thrombosis in cardiovascular devices by redirecting a small fraction of forward flow into stagnation‐prone regions. Inspired by avian alula and aircraft slat mechanisms, strategically placed routing channels restore washout around mechanical heart valves, reducing low‐shear exposure by four orders of magnitude

YAP1‐Driven Pathogenic Fibro‐Adipogenic Progenitors Secrete IL‐6 and FGF21 to Mediate Muscle‐Bone Crosstalk and Promote Bone Loss

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Fibro‐adipogenic progenitors (FAPs) in atrophic muscle undergo YAP1‐driven pathogenic activation, secreting IL‐6 and FGF21 as bone‐catabolic myokines that mediate muscle‐bone crosstalk and promote bone loss. Genetic or pharmacological targeting of this YAP1‐FAP‐myokine axis rescues skeletal deterioration, identifying FAP‐derived myokines as therapeutic

Modeling a hypersaline lagoon to evaluate salinity changes due to morphology of an ocean connection [PDF]

open access: yesRBRH
Araruama is a perennial hypersaline lagoon where seawater flows in through a narrow connection and spreads, where it is intensively evaporated. Although the inflow of seawater increases the salts load, a high inflow may reduce flushing time, decreasing ...

A Compact Hollow Fiber Electrode Assembly Architecture for Continuous Electrochemical Marine Carbon Dioxide Removal

open access: yesAdvanced Energy Materials, EarlyView.
A coaxial, membrane‐integrated hollow fiber electrode assembly (HFEA) is developed for continuous marine carbon mineralization. By utilizing a sub‐millimeter inter‐electrode gap, the HFEA minimizes Ohmic losses, achieving 50% energy reduction and over 85% DIC removal.
