Water temperature and catchment characteristics drive variation in carbon dioxide and methane emissions from small ponds in a peatland‐rich, high‐altitude tropical ecosystem

open access: yesLimnology and Oceanography, EarlyView.
Abstract Inland waters release significant amounts of carbon into the atmosphere, with small ponds acting as hot spots. High variability and limited research make emissions from small waterbodies a major source of uncertainty, especially in underrepresented tropical ecosystems where unique drivers remain poorly understood.

Hierarchical modeling of Baltic Sea phytoplankton reveals increasing cyanobacteria dominance

open access: yesLimnology and Oceanography, EarlyView.
Abstract Understanding how phytoplankton communities respond to environmental changes is critical for mitigating the impact of changing oceans. To identify the main drivers of changes in phytoplankton community composition and species richness, hierarchical modeling of species communities (HMSC) was used to model the summer phytoplankton communities ...

The BELSAR dataset: Mono- and bistatic full-pol L-band SAR for agriculture and hydrology

open access: yesScientific Data
The BELSAR dataset consists of high-resolution multitemporal airborne mono- and bistatic fully-polarimetric synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data in L-band, alongside concurrent measurements of vegetation and soil biogeophysical variables measured in maize

Zooplankton diversity in highly urbanized ponds: The role of road salt is not reflected by watershed impervious cover

open access: yesLimnology and Oceanography, EarlyView.
Abstract Urban ecosystems are structured by multiple anthropogenic stressors, yet despite the increasing extent and rate of urbanization worldwide, the ecological consequences of excessive road salt application and other urban phenomena remain poorly resolved.

Recurring cryptic mass mortalities—Lessons from bioturbating echinoids under combined climatic and anthropogenic stress

open access: yesLimnology and Oceanography, EarlyView.
Abstract Marine mass mortality events (MMEs) are a growing source of concern globally. Affecting diverse marine ecosystems, they frequently cause significant ecological disruptions, often leading to large‐scale ecological shifts. However, in contrast to terrestrial MMEs, most marine mortalities likely occur undetected, particularly in cryptic and ...

Using physics‐informed neural networks to quantify submarine groundwater discharge under high‐frequency tidal dynamics using heat as a tracer

open access: yesLimnology and Oceanography: Methods, EarlyView.
Abstract Estimating exchange rates of submarine groundwater discharge (SGD) at high temporal resolution over extended periods remains challenging, particularly when using heat as a tracer in highly dynamic environments such as tidal systems. Currently available heat transport models struggle to accurately quantify SGD exchange rates in these settings ...
