Rethinking plastic waste: innovations in enzymatic breakdown of oil‐based polyesters and bioplastics

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Plastic pollution remains a critical environmental challenge, and current mechanical and chemical recycling methods are insufficient to achieve a fully circular economy. This review highlights recent breakthroughs in the enzymatic depolymerization of both oil‐derived polyesters and bioplastics, including high‐throughput protein engineering, de novo ...

Homologous expression and purification of human HAX‐1 for structural studies

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
This research protocol provides detailed instructions for cloning, expressing, and purifying large quantities of the intrinsically disordered human HAX‐1 protein, N‐terminally fused to a cleavable superfolder GFP, from mammalian cells. HAX‐1 is predicted to undergo posttranslational modifications and to interact with membranes, various cellular ...

Kosmotropes and chaotropes: modelling preferential exclusion, binding and aggregate stability [PDF]

open access: yes, 2004
Kosmotropic cosolvents added to an aqueous solution promote the aggregation of hydrophobic solute particles, while chaotropic cosolvents act to destabilise such aggregates. We discuss the mechanism for these phenomena within an adapted version of the two-

Stabilization of nanobubbles under hydrophobic confinement

open access: yes, 2019
It has been recently shown that nanobubbles exhibit a remarkable and unexpected stability. The lifetime of nanobubbles, formed either within liquids or on hydrophobic surfaces, can exceed by more than 10 orders of magnitude the theoretical expectation ...

The photoswitchable cannabinoid azo‐HU308 enables optical control of Ca2+ dynamics in INS‐1 β‐cells via off‐target effects on TRPC channels

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Light activation of the photoswitchable cannabinoid ligand azo‐HU308 triggers Ca2+ influx in pancreatic β‐cells through TRPC channels, independent of CB2 cannabinoid receptors. This reveals a non‐GPCR pathway for cannabinoid modulation of β‐cell Ca2+ dynamics and establishes azo‐HU308 as an optical tool to study cannabinoid signaling through TRP ...

The effect of NOM characteristics and membrane type on microfiltration performance [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
Efforts to understand and predict the role of different organic fractions in the fouling of low-pressure membranes are presented. Preliminary experiments with an experimental apparatus that incorporates automatic backwashing and filtration over several ...

C2α‐carbanion‐protonating glutamate discloses tradeoffs between substrate accommodation and reaction rate in actinobacterial 2‐hydroxyacyl‐CoA lyase

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Enzymes of the 2‐hydroxyacyl‐CoA lyase group catalyze the condensation of formyl‐CoA with aldehydes or ketones. Thus, by structural adaptation of active sites, practically any pharmaceutically and industrially important 2‐hydroxyacid could be biotechnologically synthesized. Combining crystal structure analysis, active site mutations and kinetic assays,

MULTIVARIATE ANALYSIS OF THE PHYSICO MECHANICAL PARAMETERS VARIATION FOR HYDROPHOBIC TEXTILE [PDF]

open access: yesAnnals of the University of Oradea: Fascicle of Textiles, Leatherwork, 2017
This work presents a multivariate analyse regarding textile surfaces treated with fluorocarbon chemicals in order to obtain hydrophobic effect. The hydrophobic characteristics of the textile samples (cotton 100%) were obtained after hydrophobization ...

Promiscuous stimulation of HSP70 ATPase activity by parasite‐derived J‐domains

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
The malaria parasite Plasmodium falciparum exports three highly homologous yet functionally divergent J‐domain proteins into human erythrocytes. Here, we show that J‐domains isolated from all three proteins effectively stimulate the ATPase activity of both endogenous host and exported parasite HSP70 chaperones.

A lattice model of hydrophobic interactions

open access: yes, 2006
Hydrogen bonding is modeled in terms of virtual exchange of protons between water molecules. A simple lattice model is analyzed, using ideas and techniques from the theory of correlated electrons in metals.
