3D‐Printed Porous Hydroxyapatite Formed via Enzymatic Mineralization

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Bone combines lightness, strength, and the ability to heal, inspiring new materials design. This work introduces a room‐temperature, enzyme‐mediated 3D printing method to create porous hydroxyapatite scaffolds. The process avoids energy‐intensive sintering, preserves bioactivity, and allows control over porosity and mineralization.

Nano‐ and Micro‐Sized Solid Materials Used as Antiviral Agents

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Due to the rise of viral infections in humans and possible viral outbreaks, the use of nano‐ or micro‐sized materials as antiviral agents is rapidly increasing. This review explores their antiviral properties against RNA and DNA viruses, either as a prevention or a treatment tool, by delving into their mechanisms of action and how to properly assess ...

Liquid Phase Transmission Electron Microscopy: A Window into the Early Stages of Complex Material Formation

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Liquid‐phase transmission electron microscopy enables direct observation of nucleation and growth processes in solution. This review is dedicated to the remembrance of Helmut Cölfen and highlights recent studies on complex materials—oxides, biominerals, organic–inorganic crystals—which were central to his research activity. It summarizes key milestones,

Evolving Fluid Source During the Growth of a Trench‐Parallel Seismogenic Fault System

open access: yesGeochemistry, Geophysics, Geosystems
Fluid infiltration along seismically‐active faults and fluid‐rock interaction influence the mechanical behavior of faults. Nevertheless, how fluid infiltration and fluid‐rock interactions evolve at seismogenic depths with fault slip accumulation remain ...

CHNOSZ: Thermodynamic Calculations and Diagrams for Geochemistry

open access: yesFrontiers in Earth Science, 2019
Thermodynamic calculations are an essential tool for many areas of geochemistry. Thermodynamics provides a framework for the quantitative description and prediction of the solubilities and relative stabilities of different minerals, metal transport in ...

Experimental and Theoretical Investigation of Alkene Transformations in Oceanic Hydrothermal Fluids: A Mechanistic Study of Styrene

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, 2023
Natural organic matter plays an important role in oceanic hydrothermal systems through a combination of geological and chemical processes. However, identifying the hydrothermal pathways of organic compounds is still quite limited, preventing us from ...

Geochemical Fingerprints: Tracing the Origin and Evolution of the Teleghma Geothermal System, Northeastern Algeria

open access: yesEarth
Boreholes in the Teleghma region of northeastern Algeria discharge thermal water with temperatures between 40 and 49 °C and total dissolved solids (TDS) ranging from 570 to 940 mg/L. The stable isotope compositions range from –7.8‰ to –6.2‰ for δ18O and –

A Field Trip to the Archaean in Search of Darwin’s Warm Little Pond

open access: yesLife, 2016
Charles Darwin’s original intuition that life began in a “warm little pond” has for the last three decades been eclipsed by a focus on marine hydrothermal vents as a venue for abiogenesis.
