Cholesterol, Hydroxycholesterols, and Bile Acids
Biochemical and Biophysical Research Communications, 2002Although a variety of oxidation products of cholesterol occur in vitro, enzyme-catalyzed oxidations can occur at only 5 sites on the cholesterol molecule: C7alpha, C22R, C24S, C25, and C27. The genes coding for the synthesis of these enzymes were cloned, the tissue expressions of the mRNAs were identified, and the enzymes were characterized.

7α-Hydroxylation of 25-hydroxycholesterol and 27-hydroxycholesterol in human fibroblasts
Biochimica et Biophysica Acta (BBA) - Lipids and Lipid Metabolism, 1995The metabolism of 27-hydroxycholesterol and 25-hydroxycholesterol was studied in cultures of human diploid fibroblasts. Both steroids underwent 7 alpha-hydroxylation with subsequent oxidation to 7 alpha-hydroxy-3-oxo-delta 4 steroids. A minor fraction of the 27-hydroxysteroids was oxidized to acids.

Investigation on the synthesis of 24-(R)-hydroxycholesterol
Steroids, 2023A facile and novel strategy has been developed for synthesis of 24-(R)-hydroxycholesterol, a key intermediate of tacalcitol, starting from 24-dehydrocholesterol in seven steps with 48.2% overall yield and high diastereomer ratio. Photocatalytic oxidation of olefins by employing inexpensive Rose Bengal as photosensitizer and air as the sole oxidant for ...

General Pharmacology: The Vascular System, 1994
1. The bishemisuccinates of 7 alpha-hydroxycholesterol and 7 beta-hydroxycholesterol induced a dose-dependent decrease in the incorporation of [3H]thymidine into fibroblast cell line (3T3), macrophage-like cell line (P388D1) and rat hepatoma cell line (H35). Concomitantly there was a reduction in cell viability. 2.

Investigation on the synthesis of 25-hydroxycholesterol
Steroids, 2014A very efficient and environmentally benign method has been developed for the synthesis of 25-hydroxycholesterol. The reaction was performed in THF-water (4:1, v/v) using NBS as the brominating agent, followed by the easy reduction of C-Br with lithium aluminum hydride in THF, to yield the final product corresponding to a Markovnikov's rule.

Synthesis of ent-25-hydroxycholesterol
Steroids, 200625-Hydroxycholesterol (25-HC) appears to play a role in several important biological processes, including regulating cellular cholesterol levels and promoting apoptosis. However, in most cases the mechanisms by which 25-HC elicits its biological effects are not known.

Synthesis of (25R)-26-hydroxycholesterol
Steroids, 2002We describe the synthesis of (25R)-cholest-5-en-3beta,26-diol ((25R)-26-hydroxycholesterol) from diosgenin in four steps in 58% overall, yield via a modified Clemmensen reduction followed by a Barton deoxygenation reaction.
