Measurement of urinary 5-HIAA: correlation between spot versus 24-h urine collection

open access: yesEndocrine Connections, 2019
Background: The 24-h urinary output of 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid (5-HIAA) is used to monitor disease progression and treatment responses of neuroendocrine neoplasms (NENs).

Linguistic mechanism of the evolution of amino acid frequencies and genomic GC content [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2006
Much information is stored in amino acid composition of protein and base composition of DNA. We simulated the evolution of amino acid frequencies and genomic GC content by a linguistic model. It is showed that the evolution of genetic code determines the evolution of amino acid frequencies and genomic GC content.

The correlation between urinary 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid and sperm quality in infertile men and rotating shift workers

open access: yesReproductive Biology and Endocrinology, 2010
Background Serotonin is a neurotransmitter that modulates a wide range of neuroendocrine functions. However, excessive circulating serotonin levels may induce harmful effects in the male reproductive system.

Genetic Code Table: A note on the three splittings into amino acid classes [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2009
This note represents the further progress in understanding the determination of the genetic code by Golden mean (Rakocevic, 1998). Three classes of amino acids that follow from this determination (the 7 "golden" amino acids, 7 of their complements, and 6 non-complements) are observed now together with two further possible splittings into 4 x 5 and 5 x ...

Tumor carcinóide: contributo da ecocardiografia para o diagnóstico.

open access: yesActa Médica Portuguesa, 2011
Carcinoid tumors are rare, most commonly originating from the neuroendocrine cells in the gastrointestinal tract. Carcinoid syndrome is characterized by flushing, diarrhea, and bronchospasm.

Snca and Bdnf gene expression in the VTA and raphe nuclei of midbrain in chronically victorious and defeated male mice [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
The study aimed to analyze the mRNA levels of Snca and Bdnf genes in the ventral tegmental area (VTA) and raphe nuclei of the midbrain in male mice that had each won or defeated 20 encounters in daily agonistic interactions.

Impaired Clearance of Methotrexate in Organic Anion Transporter 3 (Slc22a8) Knockout Mice: A Gender Specific Impact of Reduced Folates [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
Purpose To elucidate the role of the renal basolateral transporter, Oat3, in the disposition of methotrexate. Materials and Methods Chinese hamster ovary cells expressing mouse Oat3 were used to determine kinetics and specificity of inhibition of ...

Nocturnal elevation of plasma melatonin and urinary 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid in young men: attempts at modification by brief changes in environmental lighting and sleep and by autonomic drugs.

open access: yesJournal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism, 1976
In order to determine whether the human pattern of circulating melatonin resembles that previously described in lower animals, men 19-32 years old were exposed to a light-dark cycle with 14 hours of light per day (L:D 14:10).
