Navigating the cholesterol maze: Key insights on use of statins in neurodegenerative disorders

open access: yesNeuroprotection, Volume 4, Issue 1, Page 30-47, March 2026.
The graphical abstract encapsulates the dual neuroprotective mechanisms of statins in neurodegenerative diseases, highlighting both cholesterol‐dependent and cholesterol‐independent pathways. By inhibiting 3‐hydroxy‐3‐methylglutaryl coenzyme A (HMG‐CoA) reductase, statins reduce cholesterol synthesis, leading to altered lipid raft structures that ...

Inactivation of hydroxymethylglutaryl-CoA reductase from yeast by coenzyme A disulfide.

open access: yesJournal of Biological Chemistry, 1981
The time-dependent inactivation of hydroxymethylglutaryl-CoA reductase from yeast by solutions of hydroxymethylglutaryl-CoA and CoASH is due to the rapid inactivation of the enzyme by oxidized CoA (CoA disulfide) present at trace levels in solutions of hydroxymethylglutaryl-CoA and CoASH.

Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG) for Evaluating Regulatory Compliance of Drug Information and Clinical Trial Protocols

open access: yesCPT: Pharmacometrics &Systems Pharmacology, Volume 15, Issue 3, March 2026.
ABSTRACT The purpose was to evaluate retrieval‐augmented generative (RAG) artificial intelligence (AI) methods for assessing the regulatory compliance of drug information and adherence to best practices in clinical trial protocols. Integrated systems containing RAG and large language model (LLM) components were employed to evaluate drug information and

Effects of lovastatin and dietary cholesterol on sterol homeostasis in healthy human subjects

open access: yes, 1993
We measured biliary and fecal sterol outputs in 12 human sub-jects on a metabolic ward in four randomly allocated, 6-7 wk periods: (a) lovastatin (40 mg b.i.d.) + low cholesterol diet (mean 246 mg/d), (b) lovastatin + high cholesterol diet (mean 1,071 mg/

Atorvastatin‐Associated Liver Injury: Outcome After Statin Rechallenge

open access: yesFundamental &Clinical Pharmacology, Volume 40, Issue 2, March 2026.
ABSTRACT Background Statin‐induced liver injury is frequent and usually not severe. The aim of the present study was to describe the safety of statin rechallenge after atorvastatin‐induced liver injury because it is poorly documented. Methods Cases of liver injury involving atorvastatin were selected from the French pharmacovigilance database ...

Rosuvastatin in Combination With Bortezomib Promotes Osteogenesis in Myeloma Bone Disease by Inhibiting the Secretion of CCL3

open access: yeseJHaem, Volume 7, Issue 1, February 2026.
ABSTRACT Background Myeloma bone disease (MBD) is a devastating complication of multiple myeloma (MM) and a primary cause of disability in affected patients. Its pathogenesis is driven by an imbalance in bone remodeling, largely attributed to the overexpression of C‐C motif chemokine ligand 3 (CCL3). While both bortezomib and statins have been reported

The effect of oligomeric procyanidins on endothelial function and cholesterol homeostasis

open access: yes, 2012
PhDOligomeric procyanidins (OPC) are naturally occurring dietary substances, which studies suggest can protect against cardiovascular disease. To explore this further a double-blind randomised controlled crossover trial, EPICURE (Evaluation of high ...

Regulation of human leukocyte microsomal hydroxymethylglutaryl-CoA reductase activity by a phosphorylation and dephosphorylation mechanism

open access: yesBiochimica et Biophysica Acta (BBA) - Molecular Cell Research, 1984
The activity of microsomal 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl coenzyme A reductase (EC 1.1.1.34), obtained from cultured human IM-9 lymphoid cells or freshly isolated human peripheral blood leukocytes, is modulated by a phosphorylation/dephosphorylation mechanism.

Dietary Coenzyme Q10 Suppressed Hepatic Hydroxymethylglutaryl-CoA Reductase Activity in Laying Hens

open access: yesBioscience, Biotechnology, and Biochemistry, 2013
The effects of dietary coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) on cholesterol metabolism in laying hens were investigated. Dietary CoQ10 significantly reduced egg yolk cholesterol content and suppressed hepatic hydroxymethylglutaryl-CoA reductase (HMGR) activity. It is therefore likely that CoQ10 acts as an HMGR inhibitor in the livers of laying hens, which in turn ...
