Hylomorphism Extended: Dynamical Forms and Minds

open access: yesPhilosophies, 2018
Physical objects are compounds of matter and form, as stated by Aristotle in his hylomorphism theory. The concept of “form„ in this theory refers to physical structures or organizational structures.

A Crazy Idea: Ibn Sīnā on Hylomorphism, the Elements, Mixture and Evolutionary Processes

open access: yesTheoria, EarlyView.

The Use of Sets (and Other Extensional Entities) in the Analysis of Hylomorphically Complex Objects

open access: yesMetaphysics, 2018
Hylomorphically complex objects are things that change their parts or matter or that might have, or have had, different parts or matter. Often ontologists analyze such objects in terms of sets (or functions, understood set-theoretically) or other ...

The Appreciation Game: A Monist Ontology of Works of Art

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Philosophy, Volume 34, Issue 2, Page 531-544, June 2026.
Abstract A pluralist ontology of art states that works of art can belong to distinct ontological categories whereas a monist ontology states that all works of art belong to one ontological category. A monist ontology would be preferable since it is more informative about the nature of art, and may pave the way for a definition of art.

Distant Transport of Antimicrobial Protection by Implantable Polymeric Meshes

open access: yesMacromolecular Materials and Engineering, Volume 311, Issue 5, May 2026.
A computational model is developed to elucidate the mechanisms governing the interaction between polymeric meshes and drug elution in implantable devices. The model is validated through extensive in vitro and in vivo testing showing its ability to capture the key phenomena underlying drug distribution over time and space.

Marx's Concept of Life

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Philosophy, Volume 34, Issue 1, Page 163-190, March 2026.
Abstract This essay aims to reveal the conceptual unity of an ensemble of concepts of organic, animal, and anthropological life articulated by the young Karl Marx between 1842 and 1844. To lay the groundwork for my analysis, I begin with Marx's general account of “life as activity.” I argue that Marx articulates a hylomorphic theory of organic form in ...
