Sobre a definição de natureza

open access: yesKriterion, 2010
Pretendo neste artigo discutir a definição de natureza que Aristóteles oferece em Física 192b 20-23, tentando mostrar que tal definição deve ser entendida como uma conjunção de três (não apenas duas) condições: a primeira condição estabelece que a ...

Scholastic Hylomorphism and Dean Zimmerman

open access: yesTheoLogica, 2023
I present Dean Zimmerman’s conceptualization of the varieties of substance dualism. I then focus attention on a form of dualism that he has discussed briefly in a few places, Thomistic dualism as he calls it, or hylomorphic dualism, as I call it.

A Crazy Idea: Ibn Sīnā on Hylomorphism, the Elements, Mixture and Evolutionary Processes

open access: yesTheoria, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Ibn Sīnā (c. 973‐1037), the Avicenna of Latin fame, developed a unique theory of the elements and their status in mixtures that severely challenged the views of earlier natural philosophers and in its turn was severely challenged by later Latin Schoolmen in the West.

Domesticating robots, domesticating language: The hylomorphic paradox of “openness” in large language models

open access: yesJournal of Linguistic Anthropology, Volume 36, Issue 2, August 2026.
Abstract This article examines how openness is interpreted in human–LLM interaction through an ethnographic study of a robotics experiment. Focusing on an episode in which a robot produced an unexpected utterance, I analyze how engineers classify the output as inconsequential noise.

The Appreciation Game: A Monist Ontology of Works of Art

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Philosophy, Volume 34, Issue 2, Page 531-544, June 2026.
Abstract A pluralist ontology of art states that works of art can belong to distinct ontological categories whereas a monist ontology states that all works of art belong to one ontological category. A monist ontology would be preferable since it is more informative about the nature of art, and may pave the way for a definition of art.

Distant Transport of Antimicrobial Protection by Implantable Polymeric Meshes

open access: yesMacromolecular Materials and Engineering, Volume 311, Issue 5, May 2026.
A computational model is developed to elucidate the mechanisms governing the interaction between polymeric meshes and drug elution in implantable devices. The model is validated through extensive in vitro and in vivo testing showing its ability to capture the key phenomena underlying drug distribution over time and space.

An Alien Word? Cosmic Salvation within a Rahnerian Framework

open access: yesThe Heythrop Journal, Volume 67, Issue 3, Page 320-337, May 2026.
Abstract The possibility of life beyond our planet raises serious theological questions for Christians, particularly in the realm of soteriology. How would Jesus of Nazareth relate to such creatures? Is he the ‘universal’ saviour, in the cosmic sense? Or are there other incarnations of the Logos, the Word or Son of God?

The Modal Status of Generative Principles

open access: yesMetaphysics
This contribution to a symposium marking the 30th anniversary of Kit Fine’s “Essence and Modality” raises a general question for essentialist theories of modality: What sort of proposition can figure in the essence of a property? Several versions of Fine’

Cosmic hylomorphism

open access: yes, 2021
Abstract: The primitive ontology approach to quantum mechanics seeks to account for quantum phenomena in terms of a distribution of matter in three-dimensional space (or four-dimensional spacetime) and a law of nature that describes its temporal development.
