Extensive hepatic surgery is often associated with coagulopathies. The thrombelastograph, a mechanical system that uses small (0.5 ml) whole blood samples, can detect hypercoagulability, plasma factor deficiencies, decreased platelet function, and fibrinolysis and heparin sodium effect.
