Hyperketonemia (ketosis), oxidative stress and type 1 diabetes
The long-term complications of diabetes are the leading causes of morbidity and mortality in the type 1 diabetic population and remain a major public health issue. Hyperglycemia is one of the major risk factors in the development of vascular complications.

Hyperketonemia and ketosis increase the risk of complications in type 1 diabetes [PDF]
Diets that boost ketone production are increasingly used for treating several neurological disorders. Elevation in ketones in most cases is considered favorable, as they provide energy and are efficient in fueling the body's energy needs. Despite all the benefits from ketones, the above normal elevation in the concentration of ketones in the ...

Adrenergic Mechanism in Hyperketonemia in Thyrotoxic and Starved Rats
Experimental and Clinical Endocrinology & Diabetes, 2009To evaluate the possible role of the adrenergic mechanism in hyperketonemia in hyperthyroidism and starvation, the plasma concentrations of FFA, acetoacetate (AcAc), and beta-hydroxybutyrate (BOHB) were measured in thyrotoxic and starved rats for 96 hours.

Dry period and parturient predictors of early lactation hyperketonemia in dairy cattle [PDF]
The purpose was to determine important dry and calving period predictors of (1) a cow developing hyperketonemia at any time between 3 and 16 d in milk (DIM) and (2) a cow having hyperketonemia at her first β-hydroxybutyrate (BHBA) test after calving (between 3 and 5 DIM).

Impact of hyperketonemia in early lactation dairy cows on health and production [PDF]
Data from 1,010 lactating lactating, predominately component-fed Holstein cattle from 25 predominately tie-stall dairy farms in southwest Ontario were used to identify objective thresholds for defining hyperketonemia in lactating dairy cattle based on negative impacts on cow health, milk production, or both.

JAMA: The Journal of the American Medical Association, 1979
To the Editor.— The article by Schade and Eaton (241:2064, 1979) on the differential diagnosis and therapy for the hyperketonemic state 1 may have the unintended effect of lulling the reader into ignoring perhaps less common but equally serious and lethal causes of hyperketonemia and ketonuria.

Experimentally induced hyperketonemia and insulin secretion in the dog
Metabolism, 1970Abstract Effects of varying magnitudes of experimentally induced hyperketonemia on immunoreactive insulin (IRI) secretion were studied in dogs. During one-hour infusion of 7.0 mMoles/Kg./hr. of DL sodium beta hydroxybutyrate, mean ± SE serum ketones rose to 37.4 ± 3.2 mg. per 100 ml.

Hyperketonemia Induced in Man by Medium-chain Triglyceride
Diabetes, 1966The effect of a medium chain triglyceride (MCT) preparation on blood ketones was determined in fourteen normal subjects and six patients with diabetes mellitus of the maturity-onset type. Ingestion of 100 gm. of the MCT (containing 86 per cent C8 and 14 per cent C10 fatty acids) was followed by a small but statistically significant rise in blood ...

Causes of Hyperketonemia-Reply
JAMA: The Journal of the American Medical Association, 1979In Reply.— Dr Spencer is correct in that patients with ketonuria by the nitroprusside reaction may have ingested large quantities of isopropyl alcohol. Isopropyl alcohol is metabolized by alcohol dehydrogenase. 1 A recent publication by Van de Graaf and Thompson 2 indicates that isopropyl alcohol intoxication is not an uncommon clinical condition in a

Hyperketonemia in early lactation dairy cattle
American Association of Bovine Practitioners Conference Proceedings, 2014Excessive production of non-esterified fatty acids (NEFA) and β-hydroxybutyrate (BHBA) are indicative of a poor adaptive response to negative energy balance in early lactation dairy cattle, and numerous studies have reported on the detrimental effects of elevated NEFA and BHBA on early lactation immune function, milk production, and subsequent health ...
