THE EFFECTS OF HYPERKETONEMIA ON GLYCOLYTIC INTERMEDIATES IN THE DEVELOPING RAT BRAIN

Journal of Neurochemistry, 1975
Abstract— Newborn rats from dams fed on a high fat diet developed increased ketonemia and significant hypertriglyceridemia i.e. “hyperketonemic pups”. This perinatal metabolic stress led to an alteration in the developmental pattern of glycolytic intermediates in their brains. In control rats, the concentration of glucose 6‐phosphate (G6P) in the brain ...

Effect of maternal hyperketonemia in hyperglycemic pregnant ewes and their fetuses

American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, 1986
The fetus of the pregnant diabetic woman is exposed to hyperglycemia frequently accompanied by ketoacidosis. Previous studies have demonstrated that beta-hydroxybutyrate, a major ketone body, crosses the ovine placenta in significant amounts, leading to significant reductions in fetal PaO2 and increased fetal heart rate.

Starvation in Human Pregnancy: Hypoglycemia, Hypoinsulinemia, and Hyperketonemia

Science, 1970
In women fasted during the second trimester of pregnancy, concentrations of glucose and insulin in the plasma fell to a greater extent and ketone acid concentrations in the blood rose more rapidly than in nonpregnant controls. Nitrogen excretion in the urine, particularly ammonia, was increased in the pregnant group.

No Effect of Hyperketonemia on Local Cerebral Glucose Utilization in Conscious Rats

Journal of Neurochemistry, 1982
Abstract: Local cerebral glucose utilization was measured by the [14C]2‐deoxy‐d‐glucose method in conscious control and hyperketonemic rats. Hyperketonemia was induced by 3 days of starvation or by infusion of 3‐ hydroxybutyrate in fed rats. These treatments produced combined blood ketone body concentrations (acetoacetate + 3‐hydroxybutyrate) of from ...

THE EFFECTS OF HYPERKETONEMIA ON GLUTAMATE AND GLUTAMINE METABOLISM IN DEVELOPING RAT BRAIN

Journal of Neurochemistry, 1975
Abstract— The effect of increased exposure to ketone bodies in the developing rat brain suggest that intrauterine and postnatal hyperketonemia lead to an altered metabolism of glutamine and glutamate. It is postulated that this effect is related to the delayed development of glutaminase (l‐glutamine amido‐hydrolase EC 3.5.1.2) and glutamate ...

Treatment of Parkinson disease with diet-induced hyperketonemia: A feasibility study

Neurology, 2005
Ketones may bypass the defect in complex I activity implicated in Parkinson disease (PD). Five of seven volunteers with PD were able to prepare a "hyperketogenic" diet at home and adhere to it for 28 days. Substituting unsaturated for saturated fats appeared to prevent cholesterol increases in four volunteers.

Effects of hyperketonemia on mouse embryonic and fetal glucose metabolism in vitro

Teratology, 1985
AbstractThe ketone body β‐hydroxybutyrate (B‐OHB) has been shown to be teratogenic to early‐somite mouse embryos, although the mechanism responsible for these defects has not been determined. In an attempt to define this mechanism, the present study investigated the normal pattern of both glucose and B‐OHB utilization in the developing embryo and fetus.

Ketone Metabolism in Brain Slices from Rats with Diet Induced Hyperketonemia

The Journal of Nutrition, 1978
The inducibility of ketone body utilization in brain was investigated in vitro in rats fed for 21 days three diets of varying keto- genicity: a nonketogenic low-fat diet (St. diet), a moderately ketogenic high corn oil diet (LCT diet), and a highly ketogenic high medium chain triglycA©ride diet (MCT diet). The protein :energy ratio was the same for all

Effect of Experimentally Induced Hyperketonemia on Glucose Metabolism of Ovine Brain in Vivo

American Journal of Veterinary Research, 1976
SUMMARY The effect of high concentrations of circulating acetoacetate on the uptake and utilization of glucose-U-14C was investigated in brain of fed and 7-day fasted sheep. Uniformly 14C-labeled glucose and nonlabeled acetoacetate were infused via the jugular vein while blood samples were being taken from the carotid artery and dorsal sagittal sinus ...
