Subclinical Ketosis: Reproductive Performance and Milk Yield in Dairy Cows Receiving Oral Glucogenic Precursors During Early Postpartum Period

open access: yesVeterinary Medicine and Science, Volume 11, Issue 5, September 2025.
This study evaluated the effects of postpartum subclinical ketosis on milk yield and reproductive performance in dairy cows. Subclinical ketosis did not adversely affect milk yield or pregnancy rates in cows inseminated after estrus detection and a fixed‐time insemination protocol.

Comparison of four electronic cowside tests for diagnosing hyperketonemia in dairy cows

open access: yes, 2016
The objective of this study was to evaluate 4 cowside ketone meters for use in on-farm β-hydroxybutyrate (BHB) monitoring of hyperketonemia (HYK) in transition dairy ...

Ketogenic Diet, Serum Ketone Bodies and Risk of End‐Stage Renal Disease in Patients With Diabetic Kidney Disease: A Multi‐Cohort Study

open access: yesJournal of Diabetes, Volume 17, Issue 8, August 2025.
Ketogenic diet (KD) promotes nutritional ketosis and raises β‐hydroxybutyrate (β‐OHB) levels. Using cross‐sectional, longitudinal, and Mendelian randomization analyses, we found that elevated β‐OHB levels were independently associated with a reduced risk of ESRD.

Social Microbial Transmission in a Solitary Mammal

open access: yesEcology Letters, Volume 28, Issue 8, August 2025.
The socially‐mediated transfer of microbiota is thought to be a major benefit of sociality in group‐living animals with strong social bonds and affiliative interactions. Here, we tested the hypothesis that social microbial transmission can occur in solitary, non‐social red squirrels through naturally occurring fluctuations in population density and ...

The milk metabolome and its potential utilisation for enhanced dairy processing

open access: yesInternational Journal of Dairy Technology, Volume 78, Issue 3, July–September 2025.
The milk metabolome can be affected by a variety of different intrinsic and extrinsic factors, which can subsequently affect important parameters of milk quality and processability. This review explores this relationship and provides an overview of the topic of milk metabolomics as an ever‐evolving field of study.

Accuracy of a new milk strip cow-side test for diagnosis of hyperketonemia

open access: yes, 2011
The objectives of this study were to determine the accuracy of the PortaBHBTM milk strip for detection of hyperketonemia in early lactation cows, and to compare the agreement of results from quarter and composite samples.

Sustainable utilisation of salty whey generated during cheese manufacture: A review

open access: yesInternational Journal of Dairy Technology, Volume 78, Issue 2, April–June 2025.
This review highlights innovative strategies for the sustainable utilisation of salty whey—an underutilised by‐product of cheese production. It explores desalination methods, biotechnological applications and circular economy opportunities, offering practical insights to enhance resource efficiency and reduce environmental impacts in the global dairy ...

Skeletal muscle PGC-1α modulates systemic ketone body homeostasis and ameliorates diabetic hyperketonemia in mice [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Ketone bodies (KBs) are crucial energy substrates during states of low carbohydrate availability. However, an aberrant regulation of KB homeostasis can lead to complications such as diabetic ketoacidosis.

Metabolic and endocrine characteristics of pregnancy toxemia in the ferret

open access: yesVeterinární Medicína, 2009
Metabolic and endocrine characteristics of pregnancy toxemia are well documented in small ruminants, but less known in other species. The objective of this study was to measure plasma levels of certain metabolites and metabolic hormones related to the ...

Do Intravenous Butaphosphan and Cyanocobalamin Combination Affect Insulin Resistance and Metabolic Profile of Dairy Goats During Their Transition Period?

open access: yesVeterinary Medicine and Science, Volume 11, Issue 1, January 2025.
This study was designed to answer whether butaphosphan and cyanocobalamin affect insulin resistance in transition dairy goats. This combination with prescribed amounts and frequency did not have a significant effect on the metabolic indices of dairy goats but enhanced their insulin responsiveness.
