Severe asymptomatic hypertension (historically termed “hypertensive urgency”) is common in hospital settings and is frequently overtreated. In the absence of acute target organ damage, aggressive short-term blood pressure reduction or parenteral therapy is not recommended. Many patients experience spontaneous decline in blood pressure with rest.
