Roadmap to Nanomedical Applications: Nanotoxicology and In Vitro Guidelines for Lanthanide‐Doped Luminescence Nanothermometers

open access: yesAdvanced NanoBiomed Research, Volume 5, Issue 6, June 2025.
Lanthanide‐based luminescence nanothermometry holds multifaceted potential for nanomedical applications, yet despite significant research advances, clinical translation of the engineered nanomaterials is still controversial and widely disputed. This is related to crucial nanotoxicological aspects that must be addressed at the preclinical level ...

Solvent Dependence on the Intramolecular Excited-State Proton or Hydrogen Atom Transfer in Hypocrellin [PDF]

open access: yes, 1997
Hypocrellin and its analog, hypericin (Figure 1), are naturally occurring quinones that have been used for centuries as folk medicines in the orient and the occident and that have attracted much interest because of their light-induced toxicity toward the

Excited-State Processes in Polycyclic Quinones:  The Light-Induced Antiviral Agent, Hypocrellin, and a Comparison with Hypericin [PDF]

open access: yes, 1996
Hypocrellin is a naturally occurring perylene quinone that possesses light-induced antiviral activity, most notably against the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), as does the related molecule, hypericin.

The Combination of Active‐Targeted Photodynamic Therapy and Photoactivated Chemotherapy for Enhanced Cancer Treatment

open access: yesJournal of Biophotonics, Volume 18, Issue 6, June 2025.
Photoactivated chemotherapy (PACT), an oxygen‐independent light‐based therapy, utilizes chemotherapeutic regimens that remain inert until exposed to light, allowing target‐specific activation while minimizing off‐target toxicity. The integration of these techniques has the potential to improve selectivity and yield synergistic cytotoxic effects that ...

Inducing perylenequinone production from a bambusicolous fungus Shiraia sp. S9 through co-culture with a fruiting body-associated bacterium Pseudomonas fulva SB1

open access: yesMicrobial Cell Factories, 2019
Background Fungal perylenequinonoid (PQ) pigments from Shiraia fruiting body have been well known as excellent photosensitizers for medical and agricultural uses. The fruiting bodies are colonized by a diverse bacterial community of unknown function.

Electrospun Nanofiber Platforms for Photodynamic Therapy: Role and Efficacy in Cancer, Antimicrobial, and Wound Healing Applications

open access: yesMacromolecular Materials and Engineering, Volume 310, Issue 5, May 2025.
Electrospun nanofibers provide a unique platform for photosensitizers, due to their large surface area and biocompatibility, improving both loading efficiency and controlled release. The photosensitizer‐modified nanofibers are activated upon light exposure, and produce reactive oxygen species to treat cancer, pathogen infections, and wounds.

Design of Aromatic Interaction Networks in a Protein Cage Modulated by Fluorescent Ligand Binding

open access: yesAdvanced Science, Volume 12, Issue 15, April 17, 2025.
The study presents a novel system designed to control protein dynamics by orientational changes of aromatic residues triggered by ligand binding. By creating aromatic pockets within protein cages and binding fluorescent molecules via π–π interactions, the study achieves cooperative conformational change verified through X‐ray crystallography.
