Psychosis in hypoparathyroidism

Journal of Mental Science, 1962
Recently there has been a resurgence of interest in the subject of hypoparathyroidism and it has become increasingly clear that psychiatric symptoms may frequently be found in patients with hypoparathyroidism, even where no evidence of tetany is present. It is significant that in a survey, in the Cardiff area, of 82 patients who had had a thyroidectomy,

Medical Hypoparathyroidism

Endocrinology and Metabolism Clinics of North America, 2018
Hypoparathyroidism is a metabolic disorder characterized by hypocalcemia, hyperphosphatemia, and inadequate levels of or function of parathyroid hormone (PTH). The authors review the nonsurgical or medical causes of hypoparathyroidism. The most common of the nonsurgical causes is autoimmune destruction of the parathyroid. Magnesium deficiency or excess

IDIOPATHIC HYPOPARATHYROIDISM

Pediatrics, 1956
IDIOPATHIC hypoparathyroidism is one of the rarer abnormalities of endocrine function in childhood. For that reason it may be missed on occasion because it is not considered among the diagnostic possibilities. There have been 6 cases of idiopathic hypoparathyroidism seen at the Harriet Lane during the past 10 years and the youngest child of this series

Spondylitis of Hypoparathyroidism

Clinical Orthopaedics and Related Research, 1971
Idiopathic hypoparathyroidism may present as ankylosing spondylilis such as in the case we have described. Similar cases have been reported in the literature, suggesting more than coincidental relationship. Serum calcium and phosphorus determination are recommended in evaluating an individual with spondylitis who has atypical clinical or roentgenologic

Hypoparathyroidism and the Kidney

Endocrinology and Metabolism Clinics of North America, 2018
Hypocalcemia and hyperphosphatemia are the pathognomonic biochemical features of hypoparathyroidism, and result directly from lack of parathyroid hormone (PTH) action on the kidney. In the absence of PTH action, the renal mechanisms transporting calcium and phosphate reabsorption deregulate, resulting in hypocalcemia and hyperphosphatemia.

The spectrum of hypoparathyroidism.

The Journal of clinical endocrinology and metabolism, 1972
On the basis of the response to EDTA induced hypocalcemia and the pretreatment plasma calcium level, 5 grades of severity of hypoparathyroidism are denned. The plasma levels (mean ± SE in mg/100 ml) of calcium (Ca) and phosphorus (P) in 62 patients with surgical hypoparathyroidism (SHP) from a single hospital were: Grade 1-Ca 9.29 ± 0.09, P 3.49 ± 0.11

It is of special interest to the obstetrician because of the role of calcium metabolism during gestation and lactation. By far the most common cause of hypoparathyroidism is damage or removal of the glands during thyroid surgery.
