Antibiotic-associated hypoprothrombinemia

Abstract An individual patient's vitamin K status and concomitant risk factors related to underlying disease determine the likelihood of hypoprothrombinemia and bleeding in patients requiring antibiotics. Patients at highest risk should be identified and monitored more aggressively or given prophylactic vitamin K.

Hypoprothrombinemia is a relatively uncommon event in the hospitalized patient. When it does occur, it often is associated with surgery, dietary vitamin K deficiency, renal dysfunction, malignancy, and broad‐spectrum antibiotic therapy.

SALICYLATE‐INDUCED HYPOPROTHROMBINEMIA

Abstract.Four cases of severe hypoprothrombinemia caused by acetylsalicylic acid in therapeutic doses are reported. All cases were verified by positive provocation tests. The hypoprothrombinemia was accompanied by bleeding episodes in two of the four patients.

Hypoprothrombinemia Associated With Cefoperazone Therapy

Oral phytonadione in neonatal hypoprothrombinemia

Summary Orally administered phytonadione in doses of 2 mg. of an emulsion given in a dextrose feeding formula on the first day of life is as effective as menadiol sodium biphosphate given intramuscularly in doses of 2.5 mg. in preventing abnormal elevations of the prothrombin time during the first five neonatal days.
