Biosupercapacitors for Human‐Powered Electronics

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Biosupercapacitors are emerging as biocompatible and integrative energy systems for next‐generation bioelectronics, offering rapid charge–discharge performance and mechanical adaptability. This review systematically categorizes their applications from external to organ‐level systems and highlights their multifunctional roles in sensing, actuation, and ...

Coping styles in farmed fish: consequences for aquaculture [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Individual differences in physiological and behavioural responses to stressors are increasingly recognised as adaptive variation and thus raw material for evolution and fish farming improvements including selective breeding. Such individual variation has

Short-term acclimation in adults does not predict offspring acclimation potential to hypoxia

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2018
The prevalence of hypoxic areas in coastal waters is predicted to increase and lead to reduced biodiversity. While the adult stages of many estuarine invertebrates can cope with short periods of hypoxia, it remains unclear whether that ability is present

Self‐Immolative Activatable Nanoassembly toward Immuno‐Photodynamic Therapy in TME

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A quinone methide‐gated, self‐immolative, H2O2‐responsive nano‐photosensitizer (Pyz/PS) is developed for targeted immuno‐photodynamic therapy. Pyz/PS selectively activates within tumor microenvironments, restores photosensitizer activity, generates ROS, and depletes intracellular GSH, enhancing oxidative stress.

Climate change and temperature dependent biogeography: oxygen limitation of thermal tolerance in animals [PDF]

open access: yes, 2001
Recent years have shown a rise in mean global temperatures and a shift in the geographical distribution of ectothermic animals. For a cause and effect analysis the present paper discusses those physiological processes limiting thermal tolerance.

Smart, Bio‐Inspired Polymers and Bio‐Based Molecules Modified by Zwitterionic Motifs to Design Next‐Generation Materials for Medical Applications

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Bio‐based and (semi‐)synthetic zwitterion‐modified novel materials and fully synthetic next‐generation alternatives show the importance of material design for different biomedical applications. The zwitterionic character affects the physiochemical behavior of the material and deepens the understanding of chemical interaction mechanisms within the ...

DNA repair systems and the pathogenesis of Mycobacterium tuberculosis: varying activities at different stages of infection [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Mycobacteria, including most of all MTB (Mycobacterium tuberculosis), cause pathogenic infections in humans and, during the infectious process, are exposed to a range of environmental insults, including the host's immune response.

Tailoring the Properties of Functional Materials With N‐Oxides

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
The properties of materials bearing N‐oxide groups are often dominated by the polar N+─O− bond. It provides hydrophilicity, selective ion‐binding, electric conductivity, or antifouling properties. Many of the underlying mechanisms have only recently been discovered, and the interest in N‐oxide materials is rapidly growing.

The Current Controversy Regarding TMDLs: Contemporary Perspectives TMDLs and Pollutant Trading [PDF]

open access: yes, 2003
The article first summarizes CWA requirements relevant to TMDLs and outlines elements of an effective trading program. It then examines the program recently established by the State of Connecticut to allow trading of nitrogen credits among sewage ...
