Observed crustal uplift near the Southern Patagonian Icefield constrains improved viscoelastic Earth model [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Thirty‒one GPS geodetic measurements of crustal uplift in southernmost South America determined extraordinarily high trend rates (> 35 mm/yr) in the north‒central part of the Southern Patagonian Icefield.

Genetic attenuation of ALDH1A1 increases metastatic potential and aggressiveness in colorectal cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Aldehyde dehydrogenase 1A1 (ALDH1A1) is a cancer stem cell marker in several malignancies. We established a novel epithelial cell line from rectal adenocarcinoma with unique overexpression of this enzyme. Genetic attenuation of ALDH1A1 led to increased invasive capacity and metastatic potential, the inhibition of proliferation activity, and ultimately ...

Fatigue Analysis for Shaft of Inland River Ship Under Ice Load

open access: yesJournal of Marine Science and Engineering
Inland river ships navigating in an ice area cannot avoid contact between the propeller and ice block. In addition to ensuring the safety of propeller blades, the fatigue strength of the propulsion shaft system under ice load excitation must also be ...

Realistic Moving Ice Loads and Ship Structural Response [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
Prior work by the authors has shown that moving ice loads incite a significantly different structural response in steel grillage structures than do stationary ice loads. The work was based on a validated explicit numerical model of a steel grillage.

Dimethyl fumarate combined with cisplatin at subcytotoxic doses sensitizes cervical cancer toward ferroptosis and apoptosis through GSH restriction and p53 (re)activation

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Dimethyl fumarate (DMF) reduces growth of HPV‐positive cervical cancer spheroids and induces ferroptosis in cervical cancer cells via blocking SLC7A11/Glutathione (GSH) axis. Combination of subcytotoxic doses of DMF and cisplatin (CDDP) further suppresses spheroid growth and drives cell death in 2D culture models.

Response of IACS URI Ship Structures to Real-time Full-scale Operational Ice Loads [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
Moving ice loads can incite significantly different structural responses in a steel grillage structure than can stationary ice loads. This is significant because the accepted standard for the design and analysis of ice-classed ship structures is to ...

RIPK4 function interferes with melanoma cell adhesion and metastasis

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
RIPK4 promotes melanoma growth and spread. RIPK4 levels increase as skin lesions progress to melanoma. CRISPR/Cas9‐mediated deletion of RIPK4 causes melanoma cells to form less compact spheroids, reduces their migratory and invasive abilities and limits tumour growth and dissemination in mouse models.

Numerical Simulation of Ice and Structure Interaction Using Common-Node DEM in LS DYNA

open access: yesJournal of Marine Science and Engineering
In this work, the icebreaking performance of the cone structure was investigated using a new numerical model called the common-node DEM developed within LS DYNA.

Thresholds in the sliding resistance of simulated basal ice [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
We report laboratory determinations of the shear resistance to sliding melting ice with entrained particles over a hard, impermeable surface. With higher particle concentrations and larger particle sizes, Coulomb friction at particle-bed contacts ...

COMP–PMEPA1 axis promotes epithelial‐to‐mesenchymal transition in breast cancer cells

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This study reveals that cartilage oligomeric matrix protein (COMP) promotes epithelial‐to‐mesenchymal transition (EMT) in breast cancer. We identify PMEPA1 (protein TMEPAI) as a novel COMP‐binding partner that mediates EMT via binding to the TSP domains of COMP, establishing the COMP–PMEPA1 axis as a key EMT driver in breast cancer.
