They are genetically determined and affect otherwise healthy people of both sexes and all races, and are generally lifelong. Some, however, are age related. IGEs account for nearly a third of all epilepsies.

In this chapter we include a series of epilepsies with onset in pediatric age characterized by focal seizures, idiopathic etiology, normal psychomotor development, and a benign course related to the spontaneous remission of seizures without sequelae. These entities are age-dependent and seizures tend to disappear spontaneously.

Abstract Most idiopathic epilepsies are oligogenic or polygenic disorders that show extreme clinical and etiological heterogeneity. Only a few monogenic idiopathic epilepsies are known; although rare, they have contributed tremendously to our understanding of basic pathomechanisms in epileptogenesis.
