Data are presented for the hydrolytic degradation of idoxuridine (5-iodo-2′-deoxyuridine) in aqueous solution over a wide range of hydrogen ion concentration (pH 1.3 to 12.0). The over-all reaction rate was experimentally equal to k 1 [ H + ] [ H + ] + K a + k 2 K a K a + [ H + ] + k 3 K ...

Idoxuridine—A Preliminary Report
Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences, 1964Data are presented to show that the principal decomposition products of idoxuridine ophthalmic solution in acidic media (pH 1.3 to 6.7) are 5-iodouracil and 2-deoxyribose. A trace of 2′-deoxyuridine was also detected. Uracil was not formed under the conditions of these experiments.

Idoxuridine and Bacterial Corneal Infection
American Journal of Ophthalmology, 1979Corneas of 20 rabbits were treated with idoxuridine or a bland ointment before and after their inoculation with Staphylococcus aureus. The rabbit corneas treated with idoxuridine had a significantly more severe keratitis and yielded significantly greater numbers of S. aureus on culture than the rabbit corneas treated with the bland ointment.

Idoxuridine in Herpesvirus Encephalitis
New England Journal of Medicine, 1970Although great strides have been made in the development of virus vaccines against some of the major epidemic diseases of man, disappointingly little has been accomplished in the development of ant...

Contact allergy to idoxuridine
Contact Dermatitis, 1980A total of 45 of 60 patients with herpes zoster previously treated with topical idoxuridine 5–40% in dimethylsulfaxide were patch tested 2 years later with idoxuridine 0.5% and 5% in petrolatum. Three (7%) showed positive reactions. Idoxuridine is considered a weak sensitizer, but in strong concentrations and in active solvents, which increases ...

Treatment of Epidemic Keratoconjunctivitis With Idoxuridine (IUDR)
Archives of Ophthalmology, 1965A small outbreak of epidemic keratoconjunctivitis was seen at the Wills Hospital in the winter of 1962-1963. Eight inpatients and ten outpatients were involved. The symptoms and signs of each fit the many previous EKC descriptions in the literature. To the extent of our knowledge, it was the third appearance of the disease in Philadelphia in 13 years ...

To the Editor: We have read with interest the article by Dr. Robert P. Burns, "A Double Blind Study of IDU in Human Herpes Simplex Keratitis" (Arch Ophthal70:381-384, 1963). The results of Dr. Burns' trial and his comment that "IDU warrants further study but not universal approval at this time as a therapy for herpetic keratitis" are in close ...
