Data are presented for the hydrolytic degradation of idoxuridine (5-iodo-2′-deoxyuridine) in aqueous solution over a wide range of hydrogen ion concentration (pH 1.3 to 12.0). The over-all reaction rate was experimentally equal to k 1 [ H + ] [ H + ] + K a + k 2 K a K a + [ H + ] + k 3 K ...

Idoxuridine—A Preliminary Report
Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences, 1964Data are presented to show that the principal decomposition products of idoxuridine ophthalmic solution in acidic media (pH 1.3 to 6.7) are 5-iodouracil and 2-deoxyribose. A trace of 2′-deoxyuridine was also detected. Uracil was not formed under the conditions of these experiments.

Idoxuridine-Induced Conjunctival Cicatrization
Archives of Ophthalmology, 1983Four patients had idoxuridine-induced conjunctival cicatrization similar to ocular cicatricial pemphigoid develop, but in the treated eye only. Three of the four patients had chronic, recurrent herpes simplex epithelial and stromal keratitis. The fourth patient had Sjögren's syndrome.

Idoxuridine and Bacterial Corneal Infection
American Journal of Ophthalmology, 1979Corneas of 20 rabbits were treated with idoxuridine or a bland ointment before and after their inoculation with Staphylococcus aureus. The rabbit corneas treated with idoxuridine had a significantly more severe keratitis and yielded significantly greater numbers of S. aureus on culture than the rabbit corneas treated with the bland ointment.

Idoxuridine-Liposome Therapy for Herpes Simplex Keratitis
American Journal of Ophthalmology, 1981In the treatment of acute and chronic herpetic keratitis, an idoxuridine-liposome preparation was more effective than a comparable therapeutic regimen of idoxuridine alone. Both antiviral agents were more effective than a control combination of liposome and saline.
