Effects of Lactic Acid Bacteria and Yeasts on Growth Performance, Intestinal Health, and Organ Morphometry of Broiler Chickens

open access: yesFood Safety and Health, EarlyView.
The fermentation of molasses‐vinasse with lactic acid bacteria and yeasts improves growth, intestinal health, digestive, and immune organs in chickens, promoting their productive performance and organic development. ABSTRACT This study evaluated the probiotic effects of lactic acid bacteria and yeasts on productive parameters, intestinal health, and ...

Digital Imaging Analysis for the Study of Endotoxin-Induced Mitochondrial Ultrastructure Injury

open access: yesAnalytical Cellular Pathology, 2000
Primary defects in mitochondrial function have been implicated in over 100 diverse diseases. In situ, mitochondria possess unique and well-defined morphology in normal healthy cells, but diseases linked to defective mitochondrial function are ...

Research Note: Effect of butyric acid glycerol esters on ileal and cecal mucosal and luminal microbiota in chickens challenged with Eimeria maxima1

open access: yesPoultry Science, 2020
Coccidiosis is one of the most prevalent diseases seen in the poultry industry leading to excessive economic losses. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of butyric acid glycerol esters (BE) on the ileal and cecal microbiota in birds ...

Complicated Acute Appendicitis Conservatively Treated in Two Patients With Crohn's Disease: The Role of Intestinal Ultrasound and Contrast‐Enhanced Ultrasound

open access: yesJournal of Clinical Ultrasound, EarlyView.
Intestinal ultrasound and contrast‐enhanced ultrasound were used to diagnose, monitor, and guide conservative treatment of complicated acute appendicitis in two patients with Crohn's disease. Serial imaging enabled early identification of treatment response, allowing long‐term surgery‐free outcomes.

Involvement of Endoplasmic Reticulum Stress in Inflammatory Bowel Disease: A Different Implication for Colonic and Ileal Disease?

open access: yes, 2011
Background: Endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress has been suggested to play a role in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). The three branches (ATF6, IRE1 and PERK) of the unfolded protein response (UPR) have different roles and are not necessarily activated ...

Ileal pouch-anal anastomosis for Crohn’s disease [PDF]

open access: yesGut, 1998
Over the past 10 years ileal pouch-anal anastomosis has become the operation of choice for most patients with ulcerative colitis. Although pouch surgery in ulcerative colitis does have a moderate complication rate, so do the alternatives of proctocolectomy and ileostomy.1 The very real advantage of avoiding a stoma along with the inherent curability of
