Variola virus immune evasion proteins

Microbes and Infection, 2003
Variola virus, the causative agent of smallpox, encodes approximately 200 proteins. Over 80 of these proteins are located in the terminal regions of the genome, where proteins associated with host immune evasion are encoded. To date, only two variola proteins have been characterized.

Viral Strategies of Immune Evasion

Science, 1998
The vertebrate body is an ideal breeding ground for viruses and provides the conditions that promote their growth, survival, and transmission. The immune system evolved and deals with this challenge. Mutually assured destruction is not a viable evolutionary strategy; thus, the study of host-virus interactions provides not only a glimpse of life at ...

Immune Evasion in Ebolavirus Infections

Viral Immunology, 2015
Ebola virus (EBOV) infects humans as well as several animal species. It can lead to a highly lethal disease, with mortality rates approaching 90% in primates. Recent advances have deepened our understanding of how this virus is able to prevent the development of protective immune responses.

Immune evasion by gamma-herpesviruses

Current Opinion in Immunology, 2004
Persistent viruses, such as herpesviruses, transmit infection by evading cytotoxic T cells during lytic replication. The gamma-herpesviruses additionally evade T cells during the proliferation of latently infected lymphocytes to establish a persistent viral reservoir.

Strategies of Tumor Immune Evasion

BioDrugs, 2005
During the last decade, increased understanding of the molecular mechanisms responsible for immune activation to protect against challenges by tumor cells has revolutionized the field of immunotherapy research. It has been demonstrated that the dysfunction of the host's immune system represents one of the major mechanisms by which tumors evade ...
