An upstream open reading frame regulates expression of the mitochondrial protein Slm35 and mitophagy flux

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study reveals how the mitochondrial protein Slm35 is regulated in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The authors identify stress‐responsive DNA elements and two upstream open reading frames (uORFs) in the 5′ untranslated region of SLM35. One uORF restricts translation, and its mutation increases Slm35 protein levels and mitophagy.

Impact loaded structures

open access: yes, 2022
An experimental apparatus has been constructed to simulate the impact of an aircraft against a nuclear power plant. In order to test the equipment some preliminary tests were carried out with simple inexpensive missiles against a rigid steel plate target.

Structural instability impairs function of the UDP‐xylose synthase 1 Ile181Asn variant associated with short‐stature genetic syndrome in humans

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The Ile181Asn variant of human UDP‐xylose synthase (hUXS1), associated with a short‐stature genetic syndrome, has previously been reported as inactive. Our findings demonstrate that Ile181Asn‐hUXS1 retains catalytic activity similar to the wild‐type but exhibits reduced stability, a looser oligomeric state, and an increased tendency to precipitate ...

Discrete Element Simulations of Fracture Mechanism and Energy Evolution Characteristics of Typical Rocks Subjected to Impact Loads

open access: yesApplied Sciences
The dynamic fracture behavior of rocks subjected to impact loading is a fundamental issue within the field of rock dynamics. This study aims to construct microstructure models of heterogeneous minerals representative of various typical rocks and ...

Organ‐specific redox imbalances in spinal muscular atrophy mice are partially rescued by SMN antisense oligonucleotides

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We identified a systemic, progressive loss of protein S‐glutathionylation—detected by nonreducing western blotting—alongside dysregulation of glutathione‐cycle enzymes in both neuronal and peripheral tissues of Taiwanese SMA mice. These alterations were partially rescued by SMN antisense oligonucleotide therapy, revealing persistent redox imbalance as ...

Crashworthiness Design of Bidirectional Pyramidal Energy-Absorbing Tubes Based on Centipede Structures

open access: yesBiomimetics
Energy-absorbing components should be effective and stable in engineering protective structure designs to reduce collision impacts. However, conventional energy-absorbing structures have considerable potential for optimization for energy dissipation and ...

Transferrin receptor 1‐mediated iron uptake supports thermogenic activation in human cervical‐derived adipocytes

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
In this study, we found that human cervical‐derived adipocytes maintain intracellular iron level by regulating the expression of iron transport‐related proteins during adrenergic stimulation. Melanotransferrin is predicted to interact with transferrin receptor 1 based on in silico analysis.

Dynamic Behaviour of Double Basalt- and Double Flax FRP Tube-Confined Coconut Fibre-Reinforced Concrete Under Impact Loading

open access: yesDynamics
The dynamic behaviour of a column excited at the base, e.g., under an earthquake load, has been extensively studied. However, the column may also experience impact at the tip like a heavy-duty truck braking on a bridge.

Stability of Ampelometric Characteristics of Vitis vinifera L. cv. 'Syrah' and 'Sauvignon blanc' Leaves: Impact of Within-vineyard Variability and Pruning Method/Bud Load [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Historically, grapevine (Vitis vinifera L.) leaf characterisation has been a driving force in the identification of cultivars. In this study, ampelometric (foliometric) analysis was done on leaf samples collected from hand-pruned, mechanically pruned and

Reliability of composite structures — impact loading

open access: yesComputers & Structures, 2000
This paper deals with a method to study the responses of laminated composite structures under impact loading. A preliminary study takes into account the influence of the coupling mass-velocity on some responses such as the contact force between striker and structure, the displacement of the projectile, and the damage induced inside the composite.
