Machine Learning‐Based Prediction of Life‐Threatening Complications During Hemodialysis in Hospitalized Patients With Poor General Conditions

open access: yesArtificial Organs, EarlyView.
A machine learning model using predialysis data predicted sudden events during or after hemodialysis with high accuracy (auROC: 0.889). The key predictors included emergency hospitalization, recent surgery, high heart rate, low albumin levels, and high CRP.

Subcutaneous Implantable Cardioverter-Defibrillator Implantation Without Defibrillation Testing

open access: yesJournal of the American College of Cardiology, 2017
Defibrillation testing (DT) does not improve shock efficacy or reduce the risk for arrhythmic death in patients undergoing routine transvenous implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) placement and is no longer compulsory for left pectoral transvenous ICDs [(1)][1]. The subcutaneous ICD (S-ICD)

Utilization Rates of Implantable Cardioverter-Defibrillators for Primary Prevention of Sudden Cardiac Death: A 2012 Calculation for a Midwestern Health Referral Region [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Background Utilization rates (URs) for implantable cardioverter-defibrillators (ICDs) for primary prevention of sudden cardiac death (PPSCD) are lacking in the community. Objective To establish the ICD UR in central Indiana.

Preoperative Atrial Fibrillation Does Not Impact Long‐Term Survival and Complications in Left Ventricular Assistance Device Recipients

open access: yesArtificial Organs, EarlyView.
In this large multicenter study, AF before LVAD implantation was not associated with increased risks of mortality, bleeding, stroke, or pump thrombosis, but was linked to a higher incidence of late VAs. ABSTRACT Introduction A substantial proportion of patients receiving left ventricular assist devices (LVADs) present with pre‐existing atrial ...

The first cardioverter defibrillator implanted in Central Africa

open access: yesThe Pan African Medical Journal, 2016
Sudden cardiac deaths, which account for approximately 350 000 deaths each year, is a major health care problem. Antiarrhythmic drugs have not been reliable in preventing sudden cardiac death. Although -blockers, angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors,

Follow‐Up of Left‐Ventricular Assist Device Patients With Telemonitoring: A National Retrospective Multicentric Study on the Satelia LVAD Web Application

open access: yesArtificial Organs, EarlyView.
We evaluated the usefulness of remote monitoring for advanced heart failure patients using left‐ventricular assist devices (LVADs) in France. A national, retrospective study on a web application (Satelia) at nine locations was conducted. Specialized remote monitoring could facilitate LVAD follow‐ups and improve outcomes.

Oral factor Xa inhibitors for stroke prevention in patients with device-detected atrial fibrillation – Recent evidence from the NOAH-AFNET 6 and ARTESiA trials

open access: yesCardiologia Hungarica
Device-detected atrial fibrillation (AF), also known as atrial high rate episodes, is a frequent finding in patients with a cardiac implantable electronic device such as a pacemaker, or an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator or loop recorder.

Impact of the implantable cardioverter-defibrillator on rehospitalizations [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Patients who survive out-of-hospital ventricular tachycardia or ventricular fibrillation are at risk of sudden cardiac death and often return to hospital after initial discharge.

Population‐Based Study Found Low Risk of Misdiagnosing Long QT Syndrome as Breath‐Holding Spells in Swedish Children

open access: yesActa Paediatrica, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Aim An electrocardiogram is commonly recommended in breath‐holding spell management, mainly to rule out long QT syndrome. This retrospective study investigated the risk of long QT syndrome being misdiagnosed as breath‐holding spells in a paediatric population in southern Sweden.

The anti‐fibrotic effects of novel heart failure pharmacotherapies in advanced heart failure patients

open access: yesBritish Journal of Pharmacology, EarlyView.
Background and Purpose Novel heart failure (HF) pharmacotherapies, including angiotensin receptor‐neprilysin inhibitor (ARNI) and sodium‐glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitors (SGLT2is), may confer cardiovascular benefits by attenuating myocardial fibrosis. However, direct evidence from human failing myocardial samples is limited.
