Implicit commitment in theory choice [PDF]

open access: yesSynthese, 2013
The proper evaluation of a theory's virtues seems to require taking into account what the theory is indirectly or implicitly committed to, in addition to what it explicitly says. Most extant proposals for criteria of theory choice in the literature spell out the relevant notion of implicit commitment via some notion of entailment.

Structure‐forward targeting of claudins with synthetic binders

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Claudins form the paracellular barriers between epithelial and endothelial tissues at tight junctions and are targets for molecular binders with the goal of modulating barrier permeability. Claudin‐binding molecules are relevant in drug delivery or in altering claudin interactions with disease‐causing proteins.

Membrane composition and thermodynamic identity as boundaries of life for synthetic cell research

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
What makes a cell a cell? The boundary of a living cell is not just a wall. Read as a Markov blanket, the membrane separates internal from external states, generating identity and non‐equilibrium order. Can this identity be rebuilt from scratch in a synthetic cell?

Spatial and single‐nuclei transcriptomics reveals idiosyncratic and generic patterns in papillary and anaplastic thyroid cancers

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Matched spatial transcriptomics and single‐nuclei RNA‐seq were generated for anaplastic and BRAFV600E papillary thyroid cancers revealing generic and tumor‐specific states occurring in cancer cells and in the tumor microenvironment. In this context, cancer dedifferentiation mirrored organoid maturation through ordered thyroid marker gain/loss ...
