Technique for rapid in vitro single-cell elastography
Ultrasound in Medicine & Biology, 2006Statistically meaningful assays require scanning a large number of cells in a short time. Here we present a technique for rapid in vitro single-cell elastography. The technique is based on atomic force acoustic microscopy but (1) requires only a few minutes of scan time, (2) can be used on live cells briefly removed from most of the nutrient fluid, (3)

A Technique for Studying Sperm Maturation in vitro
Nature, 1972IN mammals spermatozoa mature while passing through the epididymis. In the rabbit there are virtually no fertile spermatozoa in the caput epididymidis and fertilizing ability is acquired when, the spermatozoa pass through the corpus epididymidis1,2. Spermatozoa retained by ligatures, in the proximal corpus develop a normal fertilizing ability in 24 h ...

In Vitro Fertilization and Related Techniques
1996In 1978 the medical journal Lancet published a summary by the English gynecologist Patrick Steptoe and the physiologist Robert Edwards on the birth of the first extra corporeally fertilized child in England on 25 July 1978, a so-called test-tube baby (Steptoe and Edwards 1978).

In Vitro Spermatogenesis Using an Organ Culture Technique
2012Research on in vitro spermatogenesis has a long history and remained to be an unaccomplished task until very recently. In 2010, we succeeded in producing murine sperm from primitive spermatogonia using an organ culture method. The fertility of the sperm or haploid spermatids was demonstrated by microinsemination.

In-vitro techniques: can they replace animal testing?*
Human Reproduction, 1986In-vitro tests for the long-term safety evaluation of drugs offer certain advantages. Specific properties of drugs can be identified including mutagenic and carcinogenic effects. The mechanisms leading to toxicity can be assessed. Tissue from several species, including man, can be examined.
