Vent and relief valve maintains low leakage rate over broad temperature range [PDF]

open access: yes, 1968
Low leakage rate, large diameter vent and relief valve operates satisfactorily over a large temperature range by a design that accommodates waviness and distortions due to thermal gradients. It is based on a fixed sealing member having an inclined lapped

Pressure dependent friction on granular slopes close to avalanche

open access: yes, 2017
We investigate the sliding of objects on an inclined granular surface close to the avalanche threshold. Our experiments show that the stability is driven by the surface deformations.

The Floor‐Ceiling‐Chip, or 2 × 2D = Pseudo‐3D—Approaching 3D Cell Morphology and Organization between Two Opposing 2D Substrates with Cell‐Adhesive Protein Micropatterns

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
Here, we present a novel 3D cell patterning and culture platform. The “Floor‐Ceiling‐Chip” (FC‐Chip) consists of two opposing track‐etched membranes, creating a pseudo‐3D microenvironment for the cells in between. By providing the membranes with micropatterned cell‐adhesive islands of varying geometries and sizes, the FC‐Chip enables control over cell ...

Travelling-wave similarity solutions for an unsteady shear-stress-driven dry patch in a flowing film [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
We investigate unsteady flow of a thin film of Newtonian fluid around a symmetric slender dry patch moving with constant velocity on an inclined planar substrate, the flow being driven by a prescribed constant shear stress at the free surface of the film

Lattice-Boltzmann Method for Geophysical Plastic Flows

open access: yes, 2015
We explore possible applications of the Lattice-Boltzmann Method for the simulation of geophysical flows. This fluid solver, while successful in other fields, is still rarely used for geotechnical applications.

Injectable Stimuli‐Responsive Amphiphilic Hydrogel for Rapid Hemostasis, Robust Tissue Adhesion, and Controlled Drug Delivery in Trauma and Surgical Care

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
Fast‐acting hydrogel seals bleeding wounds as the illustrated injectable, pH‐responsive network rapidly gels in situ to stop hemorrhage, adhere strongly to wet tissue, and release antibiotics in a controlled, pH‐dependent manner. The material withstands high pressures, shows excellent biocompatibility, and degrades safely, offering a versatile platform

Thermo‐Fluorescent Bactericidal Quantum Dots Based Smart Multifunctional Textiles via Molecular Surface Engineering and 3D‐Printed Interlocked Architectures

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
A versatile approach is presented for fabricating smart multifunctional textiles by integrating thermo‐fluorescent carbon dot/polymer nanocomposite coatings with 3D‐printed interlocked architectures. The fabrics exhibit temperature‐responsive fluorescence, durable hydrophobicity, strong antibacterial and antioxidant activity, and enhanced UV protection.

Experimental and analytical determination of characteristics affecting light aircraft landing-gear dynamics [PDF]

open access: yes
An experimental and analytical investigation was conducted to determine which characteristics of a light aircraft landing gear influence gear dynamic behavior significantly. The investigation focused particularly on possible modification for load control.

Surface magnetic field effects in local helioseismology

open access: yes, 2007
Using helioseismic holography strong evidence is presented that the phase (or equivalent travel-time) of helioseismic signatures in Dopplergrams within sunspots depend upon the line-of-sight angle in the plane containing the magnetic field and vertical ...

Rapid Fabrication of Self‐Propelled and Steerable Magnetic Microcatheters for Precision Medicine

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
A rapid Joule heating fabrication method for the production of self‐propelling, adaptive microcatheters, with tunable stiffness and integrated microfluidic channels is presented. Demonstrated through three microrobotic designs, including a steerable guiding catheter, an untethered wave‐crawling TubeBot, and a distal‐end propelled microcatheter, it was ...
