The syntax of the Italian indefinite determiner dei

Lingua, 2016
Abstract This paper provides a syntactic analysis of the indefinite plural determiner dei in Italian, also called ‘partitive article’, as in Ho visto dei ragazzi (I saw de.art boys). It argues that dei is neither parallel to the inflected preposition dei in: Ho visto alcuni dei ragazzi (I saw some of-the boys), nor to the quantifier alcuni in: Ho ...

Three Perspectives on Swedish Indefinite Determiners

Nordic Journal of Linguistics, 2002
This article investigates the meaning and use of singular indefinite determiners in Swedish, in particular the way in which the existential determinernågon/någotcontrasts with the indefinite articleen/ettin different contexts. The problem is approached from three different perspectives, the first being a contrastive Scandinavian perspective, where the ...

On the electrodynamics of an absorbing uniaxial nonpositive determined (indefinite) medium

Journal of Experimental and Theoretical Physics, 2012
It is shown that a surface plasmon, whose decay length infinitely increases as it approaches the threshold frequency, can propagate over the surface of a half-space filled with a uniaxial indefinite absorbing metamaterial. At the threshold frequency itself, a new phenomenon is observed-upon incidence of a TM-polarized wave on the absorbing material, a ...

The combination of indefinite and definite 'determiners' - a cross linguistic study

2020
In some languages, definite and indefinite ‘determiners’ can combine giving rise to a definite interpretation, posing a puzzle for a compositional analysis of DPs. We tested this combination in four West African languages: Akan, Ga (Kwa), Hausa, Ngamo (West-Chadic).

Indefinite Determiner Doubling: Data and Methods [PDF]

open access: possible, 2018
Syntactic doubling, expressing a constituent twice (or more) when a single occurrence should suffice, is surprisingly common, especially where functional elements are concerned (Barbiers 2008:5). Some well-known examples include multiple negation/negative concord, found in many languages, and double definiteness, found in some Scandinavian languages ...

The syntax and semantics of indefinite determiner doubling constructions in varieties of German

The Journal of Comparative Germanic Linguistics, 2008
This article investigates the syntax and semantics of a construction attested in several varieties of German, in which an indefinite determiner occurs twice (e.g., ein so ein Kerl ‘a such a guy’). It is argued that this phenomenon, which we refer to as indefinite determiner doubling, is restricted to structures containing a quantificational element, i ...

Definite and indefinite determiners in French-speaking toddlers: Distributional features and pragmatic-discursive factors

Journal of Pragmatics, 2013
The aim of this article is to study the effects of pragmatic-discursive factors on the choice of determiners (more specifically, definite or indefinite determiners) and their distributional features. It contends that distributional features alone cannot account for mastery of the determiner category and that determiner productivity must also be ...

Indefinite possessive NPs and the distinction between determining and nondetermining genitives in English

English Language and Linguistics, 2007
This article tries to fill a descriptive gap in the literature on English possessive NPs by offering a systematic description of indefinite possessive NPs (e.g. a friend's house, a widow's pension, men's suits). Specifically, two descriptive issues are dealt with. Firstly, the different types of determining indefinite genitives are discussed.
