Prediction of Mean Fragmentation Size in Open-Pit Mine Blasting Operations Using Histogram-Based Gradient Boosting and Grey Wolf Optimization Approach

open access: yesApplied Sciences
Blast-induced rock fragmentation plays a critical role in mining and civil engineering. One of the primary objectives of blasting operations is to achieve the desired rock fragmentation size, which is a key indicator of the quality of the blasting ...

The microbiological quality of water: the nature of the problem [PDF]

open access: yes, 1997
Improvements in methods for the detection and enumeration of microbes in water, particularly the application of techniques of molecular biology, have highlighted shortcomings in the ”standard methods” for assessing water quality. Higher expectations from

Function‐driven design of a surrogate interleukin‐2 receptor ligand

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Interleukin (IL)‐2 signaling can be achieved and precisely fine‐tuned through the affinity, distance, and orientation of the heterodimeric receptors with their ligands. We designed a biased IL‐2 surrogate ligand that selectively promotes effector T and natural killer cell activation and differentiation. Interleukin (IL) receptors play a pivotal role in

Minor effect of wind exposure and littoral slope on macrophyte characteristics in non-impacted lowland lakes of Poland

open access: yesFrontiers in Plant Science
Aquatic vegetation is a reliable indicator of the ecological condition of surface waters. Abundance, composition and spatial structure of aquatic communities are shaped by an array of factors, which include both natural abiotic features of an ecosystem ...

Estimation of extravascular lung water by indicator-dilution techniques. [PDF]

open access: yesCirculation Research, 1975
• An abnormal increase in the volume of the extravascular fluid of the lungs can occur in cardiogenic pulmonary edema, the adult respiratory distress syndrome, and other situations such as the "shock lung" and the "wet lung." Knowledge of this volume can be important in assessing the threat to the patient and the efficacy of measures taken to alter ...

The newfound relationship between extrachromosomal DNAs and excised signal circles

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Extrachromosomal DNAs (ecDNAs) contribute to the progression of many human cancers. In addition, circular DNA by‐products of V(D)J recombination, excised signal circles (ESCs), have roles in cancer progression but have largely been overlooked. In this Review, we explore the roles of ecDNAs and ESCs in cancer development, and highlight why these ...

An upstream open reading frame regulates expression of the mitochondrial protein Slm35 and mitophagy flux

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study reveals how the mitochondrial protein Slm35 is regulated in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The authors identify stress‐responsive DNA elements and two upstream open reading frames (uORFs) in the 5′ untranslated region of SLM35. One uORF restricts translation, and its mutation increases Slm35 protein levels and mitophagy.

Estimation of Ventricular Volumes by a Constant Infusion Indicator Dilution Technique [PDF]

open access: yesCirculation Research, 1964
A constant infusion indicator dilution method for estimating ventricular volumes is introduced and its feasibility demonstrated. Using this method, volumes can be calculated by two different approaches, one of which does not assume effective distribution of indicator throughout end diastolic volume ( EDV ).

Decolouring bloodmeal: Consumption and potential recycling of peracetic acid [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
A method of deodorizing and decolouring bloodmeal using an equilibrium mixture of peracetic acid, hydrogen peroxide, acetic acid and water has been developed to improve its marketability as a source of protein for bioplastics.

An in vivo biosensor for neurotransmitter release and in situ receptor activity. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Tools from molecular biology, combined with in vivo optical imaging techniques, provide new mechanisms for noninvasively observing brain processes. Current approaches primarily probe cell-based variables, such as cytosolic calcium or membrane potential ...
