A study of winnowing indices

Abstract Various expressions for winnowing indices or effectiveness of screens are compared. An expression which accounts for all the components of the product and the reject is truly independent of any distinction between the two. Percentage grain recovery, for a certain fixed average purity of the product, is recommended as a winnowing index.

Gastric Nonabsorbable Indicators for Studies in Man

We compared absorption of chromium-51, polyethylene glycol, and phenol red by the human stomach. Solutions at pH 1 containing all three indicators were instilled into the stomach and aspirated after 15 min. Since total recovery could not be measured, we compared initial and final concentrations of the three indicators.
