Access to higher education depends on the interaction between social origins and academic performance: background resources boost academic skills; but even when controlling for performance, privileged students are more likely to make ambitious choices ...

This study reveals that the small GTPase Rab14 is necessary for human papillomavirus (HPV) infection and plays an essential role in the transport of virions to the trans‐Golgi network (TGN). HPV in the early endosome (EE), which harbors GTP‐bound Rab14, is transported to the TGN through the switch of Rab14 from its GTP‐bound to GDP‐bound form.

Mitigation of indirect environmental effects of GM crops
Currently, the UK has no procedure for the approval of novel agricultural practices that is based on environmental risk management principles. Here, we make a first application of the ‘bow-tie’ risk management approach in agriculture, for assessment of ...

Direct and Indirect Effects in a Logit Model [PDF]
In this article, I discuss a method by Erikson et al. (2005, Proceedings of the National Academy of Science 102: 9730–9733) for decomposing a total effect in a logit model into direct and indirect effects. Moreover, I extend this method in three ways. First, in the original method the variable through which the indirect effect occurs is assumed to be ...

Design and analysis strategies for robust microbiome ageing research
The gut microbiome changes with age and associates with age‐related morbidity and mortality, establishing it as a potential biomarker and intervention target for ageing. Realising this potential requires methodological rigour, yet distinguishing biological signals from methodological artefacts remains challenging across cohorts. This review provides an

Biotic indirect effects: a neglected concept in invasion biology
Indirect effects involve more than two species and are defined as how one species alters the effect that another species has on a third. These complex interactions are often overlooked in studies of interactions between alien and native species, and ...

Compensatory indirect effects of an herbicide on wetland communities
The direct effects of large-scale disturbances are readily studied because their effects are often apparent and result in large changes to ecosystems. Direct effects can cascade through the ecosystem, leading to indirect effects that are often subtle and

The ‘Indirect’ Effects of Cytomegalovirus Infection
Cytomegalovirus (CMV) remains the most important infection in the immunocompromized host even in the era of effective therapy. CMV is usually acquired early in life and can be transmitted by contact with infected body fluids. In the immunocompetent population, primary infection is almost always of little clinical consequence.
