A New Individual Tree Crown Delineation Method for High Resolution Multispectral Imagery [PDF]

open access: yesRemote Sensing, 2020
In current individual tree crown (ITC) delineation methods for high-resolution multispectral imagery, either a spectral band or a brightness component of the multispectral image is employed in delineation with reference to edges or shapes of crowns, whereas spectra of tree crowns are seldom taken into account.

Individual Tree Crown Detection using GAN and RetinaNet on Tropical Forest

2021 15th International Conference on Ubiquitous Information Management and Communication (IMCOM), 2021
The detection performance of tree crowns in forest environment has not been satisfactory compared to common objects, especially using aerial RGB imagery. Previous methods regarding Individual Tree Crown Detection (ITCD) utilizes different data sources to improve the detection rate due to the noisy image.

Method of individual tree crown detection

SPIE Proceedings, 2007
Crown projected area has been an important part for green cover ratio in urban green investigation. Current field-based assessment methodology provides the needed information, but is costly, subjective, time-consuming and therefore update frequency is low. Remote sensing techniques provide a potentially low-cost alternative to field-based assessment,

Comparison of three individual tree crown detection methods

Machine Vision and Applications, 2005
Three image processing methods for single tree crown detection in high spatial resolution aerial images are presented and compared using the same image material and reference data. The first method uses templates to find the tree crowns. The other two methods uses region growing.

Development of accuracy assessment tool of individual tree crown delineation

2016 IEEE International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium (IGARSS), 2016
Individual tree crown delineation (ITCD), which includes treetop detection and/or tree crown delineation, plays a significant role in modern forest resources management and precise forestry. Recent years, amount of ITCD algorithms have been proposed based on passive and active remotely sensed data.

The Extraction of Individual Tree-Crown in Aerial Digital Camera Imagery

2008 Fifth International Conference on Fuzzy Systems and Knowledge Discovery, 2008
A high spatial resolution remote sensing image provides a huge amount of data about our earth surface in more details, and makes it possible to estimate forest and tree parameters directly from aerial image. In this research the segmentation algorithm of region-merging technique was used for the identification of the individual tree crown.

The Semi-Individual Tree Crown Approach

2013
The individual tree crown (ITC) approach is a popular method for estimating forest parameters from airborne laser scanning data. One disadvantage of the approach is that errors in tree crown detection can result in estimates of forest parameters with considerable systematic errors.

Detection of Individual Tree Crowns in Airborne Lidar Data

Photogrammetric Engineering & Remote Sensing, 2006
Laser scanning provides a good means to collect information on forest stands. This paper presents an approach to delineate single trees automatically in small footprint light detection and ranging (lidar) data in deciduous and mixed temperate forests. In rasterized laser data possible tree tops are detected with a local maximum filter.

Trends in Automatic Individual Tree Crown Detection and Delineation—Evolution of LiDAR Data [PDF]

open access: yesRemote Sensing, 2016
Automated individual tree crown detection and delineation (ITCD) using remotely sensed data plays an increasingly significant role in efficiently, accurately, and completely monitoring forests. This paper reviews trends in ITCD research from 1990–2015 from several perspectives—data/forest type, method applied, accuracy assessment and research objective—
