Delineation of individual tree crowns for LiDAR tree and stand parameter estimation in Scottish woodlands

2007
There is an increasing need for accurate forest inventories to assist forest managers and decision makers in the planning of the forest resources. Airborne LiDAR methods enable the construction of Tree Canopy Models (TCM) at a fine resolution, which allow the delineation of individual tree crowns.

Characterisation and mapping of forest communities by clustering individual tree crowns

Remote Sensing of Environment, 2010
For many years, the classification of forest communities and their associated species from airborne data (primarily aerial photography) has largely been through manual interpretation. With the development of digital imagery, options for delineating individual crowns and identifying these to species have become available but automated techniques for ...

Delineation of individual tree crowns for mobile laser scanning data

SPIE Proceedings, 2016
The information of individual trees plays an important role in urban surveying and mapping. With the development of Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) technology, 3-Dimenisonal (3D) structure of trees can be generated in point clouds with high spatial resolution and accuracy.

Individual Tree Segmentation Based on Mean Shift and Crown Shape Model for Temperate Forest

IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing Letters, 2021
Light detection and ranging (LiDAR) provides high-resolution geometric information for monitoring forests at individual tree crown (ITC) level. An important task for ITC delineation is segmentation, and previous studies showed that the adaptive 3-D mean shift (AMS3D) algorithm provides effective results.

The role of tree crown on the performance of trees at individual and community levels: whole-phenotypic context matters

Plant Ecology
Functional traits offer insights into plant performance. However, linking traits to individual tree performance requires considering the overall phenotypic context and utilizing traits measured at the individual level. Tree growth rates are informative metrics about performance, however how it is measured provides different information on tree or ...

Structure-Preserving Segmentation of Individual Tree Crowns by Brownian Motion

2003
A fast, simple and easy to implement segmentation method is presented. A particle is walking in the image in the fashion of a Brownian motion to create the segments. Using this method, it is possible to segment the image and find the inner structure of the segment at the same time. The inner structure could be useful for further analysis.

Multiecho-Recording Mobile Laser Scanning for Enhancing Individual Tree Crown Reconstruction

IEEE Transactions on Geoscience and Remote Sensing, 2012
This paper presents a novel attempt at combining the mobile mapping mode and a multiecho-recording laser scanner, as well as a new methodology based on the resulting single-scan point clouds, for enhancing the integrity of individual tree crown reconstruction.

Identification of individual tree crowns from satellite image and image-to-map rectification

2007 IEEE International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium, 2007
In forest area, there are few landmarks to be ground control points (GCPs) used for registration of satellite images or maps. Additionally, geographic information from the Global Positioning System (GPS) in field measurement survey is insufficient accuracy to identify individual tree crowns from satellite image.

The role of tree diversity for individual tree growth, crown architecture and branch demography

2012
In the light of the concurrent loss of biodiversity, biodiversity and ecosystem functioning (BEF) research attracted a great deal of attention and emerged as one of the important fields of research in ecology. Since important ecological interactions such as competition occur between individuals, the understanding of individual tree growth was ...

Identification and delineation of individual tree crowns using Lidar and multispectral data fusion

2015 IEEE International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium (IGARSS), 2015
The aim of this study is to propose and evaluate methodology for identification and delineation of individual tree crowns, using Lidar and multispectral data fusion. Methods implementing data fusion are based on image binarization (thresholding) and region growing segmentation algorithm.
