Relative importance of ENSO and IOD on interannual variability of Indonesian Throughflow transport
IntroductionThe Indonesian Throughflow (ITF) connects the Pacific Ocean and the Indian Ocean. It plays an important role in the global ocean circulation system.

ABSTRACT The Indo‐West Pacific genus Metaplax comprises 11 recognised species inhabiting intertidal mudflats, some adjacent to mangroves. To resolve long‐standing uncertainties, we analysed mitochondrial (COI, 16S) and nuclear (28S) markers. Phylogenetic analyses recovered Metaplax as monophyletic and resolved four well‐supported clades—the M ...

The island rule with multiple islands and its application to the Indonesian Throughflow
The island rule theory in the case of complex geometry with multiple islands referring to the Indo-Pacific Maritime Continent is investigated on the basis of Godfrey’s island rule theory.

Influx of Bay of Bengal Waters and Stirring Trends in the Arabian Sea Based on Satellite Altimetry
Abstract Freshwater transport and stirring affect air–sea interactions in the Arabian Sea (AS). Using three decades of satellite‐based surface currents, this study examines (a) the volume influx of water masses into southeastern AS from the Bay of Bengal (BoB), and (b) horizontal stirring over seasonal to interannual timescales in the AS.

Abstract Using more than three decades (1993–2024) of satellite altimetry and ocean reanalysis, we reassess the dominant timescales of low‐frequency mesoscale eddy variability along the eastern boundary of the subtropical South Indian Ocean. After removal of the seasonal cycle, eddy kinetic energy (EKE) is primarily modulated on decadal timescales (8 ...

ENSO and IOD influence on Indonesian Throughflow variability in the Makassar Strait and Banda Sea [PDF]
The Indonesian Throughflow (ITF) is a critical component of global ocean circulation, yet its response to simultaneous climate phenomena remains complex.

Abstract Quantifying the relative importance of El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) in shaping the spatial structure of the Indonesian Throughflow (ITF) is crucial for climate predictability. However, different climate modes often work together, and single data and conventional methods cannot uncover their relative effects.

Abstract Subtropical western boundary currents (WBCs) are major conduits of ocean heat and momentum, playing a fundamental role in Earth's climate. Satellite observations reveal complex zonal movements and a pronounced meridional asymmetry in WBC shifts, yet lack a unifying explanation. Here, using quasi‐geostrophic theory and numerical experiments, we

Indonesian Throughflow Variability Under Global Warming in CMIP6 Models
The Indonesian Throughflow (ITF) is a critical conduit connecting the tropical western Pacific Ocean and the Indian Ocean, constituting an essential component of the global ocean circulation and exerting a significant influence on its large-scale balance.

Water mass transformation along the Indonesian throughflow in an OGCM
The oceanic pathways connecting the Pacific Ocean to the Indian Ocean are described using a quantitative Lagrangian method applied to Eulerian fields from an ocean general circulation model simulation of the Indonesian seas. The main routes diagnosed are in good agreement with those inferred from observations.
